The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

DSCC hammers GOP on Senate 'recruiting nightmare' in 4 states

Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee says he didn’t just switch parties to earn brownie points among Democrats — he did so because of the changing dynamics of the Republican party.

“The Southerners…just had a different view of where the Republican party should be and as a result the North Easteners and some of the other moderate Republicans slowly were taken out of the party, either by elections or by choice,”

It seems the Northeast switch is a response to South switch, which in turn is a response to the Civil Rights Act.

On that "76 percent want a special prosecutor" poll result, that's a very easy one to explain, given how the media has decided to take the IRS thing and turn it into a scandal. You know, when you're in the media, one would imagine that you'd realize that you are the ones who give people the information that they are then surveyed about in the polls.

Are they really that blind about their own role in forming public opinion?

[up] Yes, this all comes back to the Civil Rights Act and the defection of the racist members of the Democrats to the Republican party. At some point it starts to swing back the other way as the remaining sane Republicans bleed over to the Democrats.

Pretty much. Its amazing how when you combine twisting the bible into saying the opposite of what it says and use it and other misinformation to hide how the dixiecrats have taken over the GOP, how easy it is to hide that the mainstream republican byline of "Morality, christian morals, and personal responsibility" seems to actually mean "fuck the poor, the sick, and the foreigner"

Yo, been out for a while. And I've discovered it's apparently illegal in Texas to have fire codes/zoning laws in like half our counties. Which appears to be how bullshit like West happened.

Fuck the Republicans in this state.

Texas officially has worse government service than my Tropico dictatorship. <.<

I'm really surprised that the residents of the state even put up with that. Something as basic as fire safety laws and adequate firemen funding seems like an obvious gimme that even the most diehard anti-government chap could get behind.

What really blows my mind is that this isn't just a case of something being overlooked, there's active resistance against implementing fire safety laws as of THIS YEAR. "An attempt to scrap the law in this year’s legislative session failed. The death of a bill from Rep. Walter “Four” Price, R-Amarillo, without a full House vote, even after West, dismayed fire-safety advocates."

And that was a bill from a Republican who was voted in with a massive majority! So you'd think that the legislature would be happy to get behind something he proposed with such obvious populist benefits, especially right after a major fire disaster. It's not like fire safety is controversial in the same way firearm regulation is, and it wasn't a Democrat proposal so it wasn't partisanship, so... I just don't understand it.

Because politicians are largely bought by corporations, who can't see beyond short term profits. Sometimes they're literally bought, but other times it's just that their advisers are all corporate.

We need to find some way to fix that. Government is supposed to be a check on all that, as a non-profit seeking entity that can force others to act in ways that have long-term benefits, but that doesn't seem to be working. So either we need to find another way to make corporations see the long view, or get money out of politics.

[up][up] You also have to remember that a lot of Tea Partiers have infested the Texas Legislature and are opposing non-Tea Party Republicans along with Democrats.

@Karkadinn: keep in mind, theres also a certain vein of republican thougyht that reads "all regulation on business is bad period no matter what. even if it claims to be good, businesses will do it out of the good of their hearts and these regulaytions are just making them not hire as many people"

It's not so much "out of the goodness of their hearts" as that it becomes a matter of competition. In a perfectly fair competitive environment with perfect information available to all actors, a company that cuts corners in ways that harm people will be outcompeted by companies that are honest. That's the theory, of course. In practice, we've observed precisely the opposite, and this is why the libertarian ideal cannot ever work.

Not relative to their wealth, though. Avoid oversimplifying things for the sake of scoring points.

I don't see how relativity to their wealth is relevant, and I'm not out to score points. I just think it would be helpful to convincing him.

The Letter from Loretto

Former CIA agent John Kiriakou, who blew the whistle on the US government’s use of torture under the Bush administration, is currently serving a 30 month sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Loretto, Pennsylvania.

Below is a letter he recently sent his attorney Jesselyn Radack, who shared it (with John’s permission) with Firedoglake based on a pre-existing arrangement. The letter details his life in prison, including an incident in which prison officials attempted setup a confrontation between Kiriakou and a Muslim prisoner, telling Kiriakou he was the uncle of the Times Square bomber, when in reality the imam was in prison for refusing to testify in the Lackawanna Six case. Prison officials also lied to the Muslim prisoner, telling him that Kiriakou had called Washington after they met and had been ordered to kill him.

Some background on Obama's pick for FBI director.

And for a bit more Charles Pierce, why the FBI is full of fail and needs more than just a new director.

Bill Moyers update on ALEC. (Pierce calls it an argument to convince your liberal friends to vote in local elections. OK, no more Pierce-flogging for a while, I promise.)

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.
