Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I remember an article linked here about the GOP Florida outreach guy quitting and turning Democrat. I also don't specifically remember any other recent articles along those lines. Is that what you are thinking about?

And I'm against that. You all might not be but to qoute John Kerry in America you have the "right to be stupid."
It's not an obligation in a legal sense, but I don't really give a shit about a person complaining about this country if they aren't using their rights to try and change it for what they think is the better.
You have the right to say nothing, yeah, but you lose the right(to me, not legally) to complain about how horribad this place is when you don't do fuck all to try and make it better. It's the same thing I say about bitching/whining. Don't do it unless you have a solution that you can offer to fix what you're bitching about. If you don't pay taxes, I don't care what you say about how our tax dollars are being spent. If you don't vote, then don't bitch about what people in office that you could have voted against are doing. It's why I was sick and tired of all the people bitching about Bush in office when they were Democrats who didn't vote at all when they could have voted for Kerry. I don't even like Bush, but they didn't even try to keep him from having a second term if they could have voted and did not.
I think you mean "(IE, a more European and Canadian view)."

Who uses a different terminology? It usually goes like this: the anarchists don't count, then you have the communists of different brands, the socialists of different brands, the liberals of different brands, the conservatives, and the reactionary. And then there's the fascists, who are insanepatriots seeking to overcome class division for the sake of the nation.

What side of the story? The IRS has too much power. Nixon used it and now some flunkies got some darn fool idea to do it again.
Fun fact, most "tea party" groups got under $15k US for their efforts, those Koch Brothers are stingy
. If this was Bush the press would be all over this story.
NO President or administration should have this power. Some IRS people need to be fired. Presidents come and go, but Obstructive Bureaucrats live forever.

And as for the fact that liberal groups were investigated equally strongly, and in fact, a liberal group was the only group that actually got turned down for tax exempt status?
Oh, and that blatantly political groups are trying to abuse tax exempt status in record number?
It's a manufactured outrage.

Nixon isn't even the first time this has happened.

Another one? Didn't the last one quit and join the Democrats because he kept getting harassed in his own office?
