The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Never mind that HAARP has been funded by Republican-stolen dollars since it was started.

It ain't in Alaska just because of our climate.

Why would I give credit for stupid reasoning? They're ignoring how the collateral damage of testing a weather weapon on the U.S. would affect the Treasury, since these places get designated federal emergencies and therefore are covered by federal funds. These are the same people (or a subset of them) who were horrifically concerned with the debt and the deficit months ago.

The problem with that vein of conspiratorial thinking is it requires them to not only believe that their leaders are evil but stupidly evil.

Isn't better to have an enemy stupider than you are? It make them seem so misguided and you are the only one who can lead them to enlightenment.

You know, that's actually close to the truth (or was until a few years ago). But the conspirators must be dismissing the actual plot and objective (to rake off America's money for their own benefit) as too sane.

Anyway, about that proposed amendment Taoist posted...sounds like a wonderful idea to me. Yeah, they'll try to find ways around it, but it's another obstacle in their way. Anybody got a petition to sign?

Let's try and get it through by doing the conventions thing in each state (however the fuck that's supposed to work as that path to ratifying an amendment was never really all that clear to me)!

@deathpigeon: Two-thirds of the state legislatures need to vote to have a constitutional convention to pass the amendment.

Obviously, this would actually work by the states either holding initiatives, referenda or legislatural votes on the amendment itself, and the convention's work would be strictly pro forma. Then, three-quarters of the states need to ratify the amendment.

No, no, there are two paths, right? *Checks The Other Wiki.* Yep. That's how the 21st Amendment got ratified (of course).

@deathpigeon: The twenty-first was ratified by conventions, but proposed by Congress.

Congress has never been bypassed by a convention before, though a couple of tries came damn close.

We'll never get an amendment past Congress in our current state, so we should probably go the convention method if we want to go anywhere.

After all, progress is the opposite of Congress.

Could be a great way for the Democrats to get out the vote, even if it doesn't pass. Sorta like what the Republicans did with anti abortion and same sex marriage measures in 04.

I wonder what form opposition to that will take. "We don't need it, we all can obviously vote" or "White men are bing marginalized again!"

Classic combo.

Wanna fix Congress?

How about an anti-revolving door tax: No person employed by the federal government shall work for an industry that their department regulated until they wait five years. No more Feds, Senators or Representatives leaping into the very industries they oversaw. No more 4 Star Generals getting fat consulting gigs selling crap to the DOD.

Term limits is another good start, and letting state legislatures elect senators again. State Democrat and Republican parties, YMMV, but they tend to have cooler heads. After all, they live next door to the people they represent.

BTW: John McCain went to Syria...

Term limits? Already tried elsewhere, didn't do squat (And would cause any remains of civility in policy to disappear).

I would like the anti-revolving door things.

I don't see anything wrong with voter ID laws. I don't think I know anybody who doesn't have some form of photo ID, and it's pretty much necessary to get just about anything done involving the government around here.

Now there are definitely some other issues where people are messing with voters in ways they shouldn't, but I think being able to show that you are in fact a US Citizen isn't that big of a deal. I remember seeing several videos around election time of people with hidden cameras voting as dead people or the elderly(both dem and repub) to demonstrate how easy it is to perpetuate voter fraud. A guy walked in and said he was effectively an 80 year old woman and was allowed to vote. There is absolutely no accountability involved, at least from what I saw.

Well, if we instituted mandatory voting, then anyone who tries to vote while pretending to be someone else will trigger a red flag, since the system will show two votes coming from the same person.

I wonder how many people actually do vote? EDIT: about half of the us population. Mandatory voting would probably change everything
