The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@RT: No, that's what the definition of private property is. It's absolutely top-down, it's just ridiculous to think otherwise. Private property is identical to state authority. The state owns its territories and so does the corporation. Does the fact that one is called public and the other private magically make the former authoritarian and the latter freedomland? I agree there's no real need to discuss this here though.

The discussion has moved to another thread and he has already realized he was operating under a different definition of private property than I and that this was a mix up in terminology.

[up][up]I am unsure how I feel about that. Many of those people have already paid their debt to society and haven't done anything wrong for years. It's cruel to make them suffer for something they might have done thirty or forty years ago. Heck, doing this would probably make them turn to crime once more.

[up][up][up] That sounds like a terrible plan in general. So an unemployed, working-class woman muders her husband one day he came drunk and tried to beat her, and now she can't have stamps anymore? All these people with the food stamps, they served their time, and they need the foot stamps. What kinda bullshit is this? They should be left to starve?

[up][up]It's populist bullcrap is what it is.

[up]Technically neither rape, child molestation, nor murder would easily put food on their table, so I don't think it's an incentive. Neither would paedophilia for that matter, but paedophilia is not a crime.

Under existing law, only drug felons have a lifetime ban from the food stamp program

Well that's completely retarded.

Vitter's amendment would expand the current ban to include convicted rapists, pedophiles and murderers and would not allow states to opt out or modify the ban.

Definitely disagree with that.

[up][up]Indeed. I will never understand the logic of these people. "They're poor so we'll cut remove the only means by which they can feed themselves thus forcing them to steal for their food! Brilliant idea!"

Also what the hell happens if they have kids? I guess they should just die or not be born into such a shitty family.

edit: I know those don't put food on the table. I'm just saying that they'll do something illegal again because now they're forced to. I didn't mean to imply they would repeat their past crime although I can see how you took it to mean that.

I thought the law of a State could only be "tougher" than the Federal Law, not "softer"?

Immigrating to the United States may be bad for your health. No, literally: "A growing body of mortality research on immigrants has shown that the longer they live in this country, the worse their rates of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. And while their American-born children may have more money, they tend to live shorter lives than the parents."

[up]The worst part is I spent a day and a half arguing with someone who actually defended Jones over that. He told me about some project in Alaska that is apparently a front for this and claimed it was being done to distract from the scandals.

Congressmen Propose The Mother Of All Voting Rights Protections

A pair of Democratic congressmen is pushing an amendment that would place an affirmative right to vote in the U.S. Constitution. According to Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI), who is sponsoring the legislation along with Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), the amendment would protect voters from what he described as a “systematic” push to “restrict voting access” through voter ID laws, shorter early voting deadlines, and other measures that are being proposed in many states.

“Most people believe that there already is something in the Constitution that gives people the right to vote, but unfortunately … there is no affirmative right to vote in the Constitution. We have a number of amendments that protect against discrimination in voting, but we don’t have an affirmative right,” Pocan told TPM last week. “Especially in an era … you know, in the last decade especially we’ve just seen a number of these measures to restrict access to voting rights in so many states. … There’s just so many of these that are out there, that it shows the real need that we have.”

The brief amendment would stipulate that “every citizen of the United States, who is of legal voting age, shall have the fundamental right to vote in any public election held in the jurisdiction in which the citizen resides.” It would also give Congress “the power to enforce and implement this article by appropriate legislation.”

Unsurprisingly, I share Charles Pierce's opinion on this.

I could see states loop-holing past that amendment.

"You have the right to vote as a US citizens....so long as you can prove your a US citizen."

Although even then it would probably still get rid of the Strict photo ID laws that some states have.
