The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Apparently not. According to the weather forecaster on that video, there's still weather conditions in the region that could possibly lead to another tornado forming in the next few days. Only thing he could say for sure is that it probably won't hit at nighttime.

A coalition of influential conservative leaders have published an open letter announcing their strong opposition to the 800-plus page Senate immigration reform bill.

Well f*ck. So much for immigration reform.

Is there a reasonable probability of a Democratic seizure of the House in 2014? If so, and if the Senate has at least 50 Democrats left, I want to see Reid launch the nuclear option.

Well, the Republicans just shot their chances with the Latino vote and may have pissed off Oklahoma.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

I'm seeing a GOP seizure of the Senate and absolutely no hope of gaining the House for the Dems and if anything a 2010 Up To Eleven

I don't see the Dems having any positive prospects at all until 2020 at best.

[up][up][up]

With the recent Obama scandals, the growing minority demographic, the still lukewarm reaction to Obamacare, the Sequester, and the debate over gun control it's hard to say who is gonna end up on top this House election.

Either way, I don't expect to see the winner get a lot of seats in 2014.

Unlike the Senate elections (which I expect the GOP to win big in) or the Gubernatorial elections (which I expect the Dems to win big in).

Short of an absolutely amazing candidate coming out of nowhere, essentially a very common sense sounding moderate, I'm just voting libertarian or independent.

I'm sick of dems and reps. Neither one is out to stick up for my interests at this point, so they can't have my vote until they earn it again.

Keep in mind that the Republican voter base is fracturing and polarizing in the extreme. All the tea party garbage has essentially been separating the GOP into moderates and extremists.

The Senate in 2014 has a chance of a GOP takeover, but not a big one, as they haven't fixed many of their Senate election problems yet.

The House is likely to stay Republican, although it's a tossup in the swing rate.

@Barkey, sorry to harp on but you appear to have missed my last post, so I will ask again. How is the military budget issues the fault of Obama, when the budget is set by congress?

As for 2014, people were predicting the Dems to lose the Senate in 2012 so let's not be so sure about them losing it in 2014. As for the House, didn't the Dems get more votes for the House in 2012?

Yes, but gerrymandering rendered that null and void.

I realise that, but doesn't it speak of a trend where Republicans are being disliked more and more? Unless they change they are going to lose control of the House, Gerrymandering can only do so much.

The question is how fast. I would say that unless the GOP pulls off something incredibly incriminating, a Democratic chance on recovering the House is there no earlier than 2016.

The problem Democrats face in 2014 in the Senate is mainly a number of retirements and a shortage of candidates.

Inhofe's just trying to whitewash his double standards, yes?. I for one thing don't see any difference between what he's listing and what Oklahoma will need.

Alex Jones is claiming the tornado was caused by Obama despite the fact that he has nothing to gain from any of this.

Also another idiot is probably going to lose his seat because he decided to be a jackass to people that are suffering.

Aside from the fact that he's up for reelection in 2016 - I'd rather like if the other senator lost his seat there - but nay, that one's shown himself in the past to be a veritable porker.

I know I definitely need to get out and vote in 2014 because Alaska has a Democratic Senator who'll be facing a challenge.

Granted, Alaska's a very moderate "red state" as they go, but our Republican Party is still far stronger than our Democratic Party.
