The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Good ol fashioned death panel obama controlling the entire government paranoia?

Yeah, but what are they reacting to? As far as I can tell, there's absolutely nothing that's happened to set them off this time.

That may have something to due with this.

[up] Ah, okay. That makes more sense then. And by more sense, I mean, it still doesn't make sense to me.

Well, accept for the fact that they didn't just target the tea party. They targeted any political group that was applying for that sort of non-profit since it's against the law for them to be too political. And they went after liberals too. And the only group actually rejected was liberal.

So obviously the IRS was targeting liberals since they were the only ones really hurt.

Good. Now please tell that to Congress and the media.

pfft. like theyd allow the ruination of a good anti-obama manufactured controversy.

It's not like they've let it get in the way of any of their other manufactroversies, such as evolution and climate change (in that there's a controversy at all).

So, in other words, they won't impeach Obama, no matter how much they really want to.

More like can't impeach. You need at least a semblance of a smoking gun, even in Congress. But as I said, they'll keep trying to tie up his term with this kind of obstructive BS so they can turn around and tell their base, "Look at how little he got done!"

They are more likely to tell their base "Look how the IRS persecuted you!", assuming that the IRS really spared the liberal groups.

They are going to ignore ... that the IRS was only after them, and not liberal groups too (assuming that it's true)?

Of course they will. They didn't get where they are by relying on facts.

And the IRS was not exclusively after Tea Party groups — they went after two liberal political 501c(3) groups as well. But you won't hear anyone on Fox News mention that.

The major fact is there were a lot of tea party groups trying to get tax exempt and that can make it look a little lopsided.

Just 906 pages? I have books with just that many pages and they are nowhere near that tall.

In that case, the picture is probably someone trying to play up to the fact the average republican base voter the image is intended for has no idea what a book looks like past the basics.
