Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"And again, I ask, how is this "free market"? Can they go two minutes without being hypocrites?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Don't you know?
The only time a free market is good is when regulations are hurting you.
When regulations are helping you, then you don't talk about the free market unless people forget those regulations exist.
(Protip: in real life, there's no such thing as a truly free market.)

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHeard a good report on NPR about why the IRS thing is an issue. From the sound of things, the initial information that the IRS asked for was about things that would be completely appropriate for determining the amount of "politics" the organizations participated in—things like how much time/money is spent on different activities and who was in charge of the activities (for confirmation/cross-reference purposes). The problem comes from things like the IRS starting to ask for "reviews" of books that are handed out or the names of everyone who comes to a rally/meeting.
NPR also mentioned that there have been other, similar accusations in the past and that they were ignored.
Yu hav nat sein bod speeling unntil know. (cacke four undersandig tis)the cake is a lie! Can't find a decent article at the moment, but members of the local sheriff's office are saying that the North Carolina Gov. is looking to cut a significant portion of State Trooper force and reign in funding of the county Sheriffs Offices, thanks to some inane idea that police=government=bad. Even a bunch of the local 9/12'ers are pretty pissed over this one, as it would leave a good portion of the rural areas in western NC even more lawless than they already are.
Yes, police are government, and government is bad, therefore police are bad. Let's get rid of them! Everyone just gets a bunch of guns and protects themselves. That can't possibly go wrong.

Or Bangladesh... Too Soon? Probably but all these incidents have the same root causes: under regulation and negligence. The developed world just hides it better and it isn't quite as endemic.

Forget progressives, let's just advertise as the "Pay For Shit We've Let Slide For Far Too Damn Long" party. When was the last time we invested more money in:
- Federal funding for public education
- Social Security and related social safety net programs
- Federal infrastructure maintenance
- OSHA and similar safety regulations at the federal level
at a rate faster than that of inflation? Hell, when was the last time we spent more on them than we took out?
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

Representative Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said the Justice Department’s secret subpoena of two months worth of phone records from the Associated Press was “chilling.”
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) on Tuesday said the federal budget deficit this year will shrink to $642 billion — the smallest since before President Obama took office and more than $200 billion less than the agency projected in February.
