Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't think it's political discrimination to look at tax records of people who overtly state that they don't pay taxes, much in the same way that it's not political discrimination if the cops burst into your house because you're talking loudly about how much pot you smoke.
It's probable cause.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIs there a large amount of tea party groups that actually say run around saying that they don't pay taxes thought? You can want to change laws and still follow the currently ones. To use your example, this would't be busting down the door of someone who screams that they smoke pot, this would be more like busting down the door of someone who openly wants it legalized.

They registered as 501(c)(4), which explicitly states that they cannot be a political entity.
501(c)(4) exempts you from paying taxes. That's why they're getting audited.
I don't know about a large amount, but I know for a fact that my uncle routinely posts stuff from his local Tea Party thing on Facebook that has talked about boycotting the IRS, usually by refusing to pay a certain amount in taxes (eg, paying all but $17.76).

"I don't know how I do it. I'm like the Mr. Bean of sex." -DrunkscriblerianHere's what I understand of the IRS / Tea Party issue, based on a report I heard about this yesterday on NPR:
There are these 501(c)(4) groups. That code is a part of the tax code that makes them tax-exempt social welfare organizations. They are bound by rules saying that they can only do a limited amount of explicitly political campaigning. They can do more than 501(c)(3) groups, which are charities, but are not allowed to do as much as (so-called) 527 groups, which are explicitly political in nature.
After the Citizens United ruling (or something like that), which let entities like corporations donate to 501(c)(4) groups in unlimited amounts, 501(c)(4) groups popped up like crazy.
During the Tea Party craze of the 2010-ish, the IRS — knowing that the Tea Party movement is intimately associated with political activism — started exercising additional scrutiny when it came to 501(c)(4) groups that seemed to be associated with the Tea Party movement. So they'd put more attention (whatever that means) into looking into groups that had names like "Patriot" and such, because these sorts of names are popular among Tea Party groups.

Also, apparently that's a year old. Did you see "May" and miss "2012"?
