The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]The Texas poll was only her against Rick Perry. They might vote for some other Republican over her.

Who might likely lack the homefield advantage (Except for Cruz, but I am not seeing him winning the election, let alone work well with Congress).

I guess it depends on how much Perry is liked compared to most of the other contenders. If he's one of the lower ones I doubt Texas will go blue.

While Perry isn't as unpopular as Mitch McConnell or Jeff Flake (the latter after the gun vote), he's still in the negative.

I love how conservatives care so much about sugar subisides but not corn.

which is probably the plan anyhow.

Make sugar even more expensive, force everyone to use corn syrup.

Ahh, conservatives. On one side, complaining about others affecting you. On the other side, feeling free to affect others.

Was Christe included in the Texas poll thing? How would he fair against Hillary.

@Midget: Nope, not this time.

The sugar subsidy is a means of keeping sugar prices high for the sake of American sugar farmers (particularly sugar beet farmers, since most of the US is unsuited for growing sugar cane). If the sugar protectionism were to be taken out, the price would fall.

This time, the conservatives are actually trying to scrap a stupid pork program that deserves to be wiped off the earth, and I'm behind them 100%.

oh. so this'd actually kill the corn syrup market.

Go for it then, repubs.

Yeah, I'm not really familiar with how all the agricultural subsidies work.

Well the problem is that they don't.

They sure do. The extremely cheap prices of US grain have ruined plenty of other economies.

Count me in in favour of removing these subsidies. That said, does it have a chance of passing? A lot of lawmakers's districts and states profit heavily from these.

More like Iran-Contra than Watergate as in "a few lower rank people are in trouble but all the upper echelons get away"? Also, didn't the exact same problem happen with 9/11, Mr. Graham?

Is this really the banner Graham is rallying his forces around? "Our government is covering something up! Maybe! We're almost entirely certain!"

Watergate is a wonderful example. Four people couldn't bug a fucking hotel room and escape quietly. He thinks the entire administration is able to cover-up the sacrifice of american lives for a re-election campaign?

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

I'm not even sure how they're covering things up. We know that these people died. It's no big secret. They tried to make a stink about them changing their story on whether or not the video was the cause but I'm confused about why that matters. They lied about the cause...okay, so? Does it really matter? It's not like they had something to gain from saying it was the video.

They are desperately searching for something that the administration knowingly lied about so they can pin it on Obama. More generally, this is part of the strategy I talked about earlier: to make so much noise and generate such violent opposition as to make it impossible for Democrats to govern, then blame Democrats for failing to govern.

But what difference does it make if their lies don't profit them? They say they lied about the cause behind the attack. Okay. Now how did that benefit them? If it didn't benefit them in some way then why would they lie about it?

It doesn't matter if Obama actually lied or not as long as they keep their base convinced that he's an evil liar who hates America, and stir up enough anger to obstruct his agenda.
