The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

OK, I'll edit-as-I-go here (note, it's partly my own estimate):

  • Leahy's 6 and 7 (the allow-homosexuals-too things seem to be there) are the first dangerous ones.
  • Feinstein's amendments seem OK. 12 is somewhat of a problem, and 14, while likely de facto already in force, is a "non-starter", quote McCain.
  • Whitehouse's are also mostly OK, except for 5 (gun rights)

I suspect that Sessions's and Grassley's amendments (esp. 16) are most or all bad. Cruz's are all bad. Thinkprogress's bad amendment list

If I understand how this works, they don't HAVE to accept any or all of the amendments proposed right?

Edit: Sessions 16 has me going "What the fucking hell?!" That's standard textbook police state nonsense!

No, they get votes. What is Sessions 16 about again?

Basically, requiring all applications to be filed electronically, require ALL immigrants to have mandatory background checks, to require personal interviews before they even can get their status, and at any time 5% of the immigrant pool is selected for random interviews. Paranoia much?

I wonder how he's going to pay for it. Anyhow, the "border control before bill" amendment was among the ones not adopted.

Now both sides just yell and villainize each other until they are in position where they no longer have to pretend to care about what the opposition thinks.

This. The dixiecrats got absorbed into the republicans because the repubs saw them as free votes.

There wouldnt be any free vote incentive to democrats to taking the Tea Party in.

9. Prevents low-income undocumented immigrants from seeking legalization. The amendment would require individuals applying for provisional legal status to maintain regular employment and a “regular income or resources” above 400 percent of the poverty line (more than $92,000 for a family of four).

What the fuck? Not even my family makes that.

Its basically part of the Go P's new attitude idea (one of many theyre trying out) of "Okay. we'll allow immigration. But only of the brain drain sort. Anyone who isnt solidly middle class or rich doesnt deserve to come to america"

It's a killer amendment - an amendment that is designed to water down the bill to uselessness.

Anyhow, they discussed the Cruz 1 amendment that wants to see several border security measures (including the fence that will take a lot to build) before the permissions can start, and killed it.

While post-industrial economies rely on middle class to support themselves, unqualified workers will be always in demand for certain jobs more educated stratas of society refuse to do. Letting more of poor immigrants would help out the economy as well in way.

I've said it before: while the Tea Party Republicans may want immigrants to get lost, the businesses (and wealthy individuals) that rely on undocumented workers for cheap labor don't actually want illegals kicked out of the country. What they want is for them to retain their illegal status yet keep seeking to enter the country, so they can be employed for slave wages. Therefore they'll make sure that their pet Congressmen water down immigration reform so as to ensure that there will still be an ample supply of exploitable low wage workers.

It's really not hard to understand when you realize who's actually behind it and what their motives are.

Too bad for Tea Party. If they were kind enough to take our radical right wings who resemble in many ways Tea Party they could get staunch voters for their fraction and Republicans. Media in Poland would get less repetitive due to lack of right wing conspiracy theories about Smolensk plane crash. Win-win for both them and us.

No, it's simple politics. I honestly doubt the the Democrats care about what the Republicans think anymore than the Republicans care about what the Democrats think.

People don't listen to the opposition because most of the time they've already made up their mind on the issue. They want to be right and they want others to acknowledge that their right. It's basic human nature.

Hm. Good to know. Wasn't expecting that; I was thinking of doing a business venture in the US or two, on account of its repuation as a good place to start stuff...

It is a great place to start a business if you can get in. Too bad our current immigration system is mostly based on who you're married to.

[up][up] Wow that meme is just pathetic. Actually, it's not even a meme. It's a bizarre hypocritical insult set to pictures. I would say that if the president decides to visit and see if he can do anything about job creation, you should probably look and see if you had anything to do with the problem.
