The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The reason(s) for why you all the channels would be better discussed in the Econ thread, but suffice it to say that cable/satellite providers would allow you to "pick and chose" your channels if it made any financial sense.

Senator Elizabeth Warren raised concerns Tuesday that negotiations over new trade agreements could be used as a backdoor way to water down financial regulations.

Violent gun crime has dropped dramatically in the past two decades, but the vast majority of Americans think it's more of a problem now than ever, according to a Pew Research Center study

You best believe gun right advocates are having a field day with this data.

You are a Christian if you adhere to the Nicean Creed. Period. You can be a Christian all by yourself, with no parish; it's called "keeping the faith".

Use of religion and prayer to inspire oneself or to beg for victory in competitons strikes me as being in horrible taste. If both of you pray for victory, only one can win, and what about the other? Is it "proof" that God does not love them, or that their faith is not strong enough, or some such bullshit? It's sick and wrong, is what it is.

You want to inspire peope to do "the right thing", whatever you think that is? That's what the Rousing Speech is for. No need to invoke God.

I believe that's one of the many theological questions usually answered with "Mysterious Ways".

The Missouri Legislature is pretty much 90% tinfoil hats. I mean. they passed a law a while back to make sure you couldnt be fired for owning a gun based on the bill's creator having "heard that it happened to a friend of a friend" once.

nevermind that technically speaking, the 2nd amendment plus anti-workplace discrimination law should already cover that.

You can be fired for being gay but not for owning a gun?

Yes. That one.

She's still in the legislature and still has the same "crazy white trash woman" haircut she had on tv.

The funny part is yes, Missouri has a lot of gun owners, but I've never once seen the media report on anyone ever claiming to be fired for owning one.

I want to see laws against the following:

  • Releasing a substantially overpriced collection of poorly-made games.
    • Any praise for the Cheetahmen games, except for their music.
  • Cruel and unusual distaste for the font Comic Sans.
  • Any formal recognition of Something Awful as the only true source of Lets Plays.

Come to think of it, wouldn't you rather add supposedly-bad people to a system you don't like, so that it is more likely to fail?

Except maybe they realize that adding more people to the system actually makes it succeed...

The problem with Comic Sans isnt the font itself. Any typographer/designer worth his salt will say so.

The problem is, much like Papyrus, its so heavily abused by clueless people in ways that will give people a headache from reading that its something of a sore point with designers.

So that list of amendments has Democrats on the left and Republicans on the right... why am I not surprised that there are about twice as many Republican amendments as Democratic ones. While I sort of like doing "investigative" work to understand a subject, I am not enthusiastic about reading the 800+ page bill (even with the relatively large type and only about half a page of text per page) and possible amendments. Any summaries out there?

On immigration: there are policies in effect that allow members of other nations to earn citizenship in the United States by enlisting in the United States Armed Forces, earning a way into the country for themselves and their families by serving in our military.

I always thought expanding on that would be an interesting solution to the illegal immigration issue. It's a compromise between the extremists who want to kick all the illegals out, and the extremists who think illegals should have all the rights and priviledges of citizens; instead of just booting out every illegal immigrant we find, we could offer them that program; you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who would argue that someone who served eight years in the United States Army risking their life to defend America does not deserve to live in this country.

I assume that the Senators have a staff that writes up a bill, according to guidelines laid out by the Senators. You'll have to check, though.

Rather than plow through that entire list of amendments(ad try to figure out what they actually all mean) can someone summarize them, and tell me which ones might be the most dangerous to the bill?
