The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Using the Bible does not make you a Christian. There's more than one type that uses it. Catholicism uses the Bible too, but is not the same as a Christian. Just like there's multiple forms of Christianity.(even sometimes different versions of the Bible)

My point is that it's not being used to push Religion on people at all. It's used to cheer the Team on.

It just seems like it, because you can hear it.

welp. in other news. Its official that some people truly have no concept of "going too far"

http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/05/08/1981721/amazon-pulls-bleeding-ex-girlfriend-shooting-target-after-outcry/

so apparently this is a compan6y that sells gun targets for shooting enthusiasts. Models include a president obama target and an "ex-girlfriend" that bleeds fake blood when shot. (the company justified this as "not being sexist by including a woman target)

Amazon has apparently taken this product off their store

[up][up] I want to go to one of those games with a banner saying "Do not put your God to the test."

[up] That's just tacky. Just use an undefined polystyrene cutout like everyone else.

I'm not really offended.

Honestly, if someone wants to buy something as tacky as that, good for them. It's nice to have warning that the person you might consider being friends with/dating/going near the house of is a lunatic.

Uh, Catholicism IS a denomination of Christianity, and all Catholics are Christians.

Protestant Christianity is technically an off-shoot of Catholicism, and the Orthodox Churches were an off-shoot of Catholicism, or the other way around, depending on who you ask.

[up][up]Those people are just being stupid. The four main branches of Christianity can be pretty different from each other but they're still all forms of Christianity.

It's akin to saying someone isn't an American because they come from New York instead of Maryland or something.

Not really even close to the same thing.

Regardless, people using the Bible are not automatically Christians. Which is completely true. Some people read it without being in any parish or might find a part or two interesting.

[up]How is that not an accurate comparison? They're both all Americans regardless of their different background.

Likewise Catholics, Protestants, etc. are all Christians even if they don't agree on many things.

Because it fully misses the point.

Being born an American does make you an American.

Reading the Bible or following it doesn't actually make you a Christian.

That's why it's not an apt comparison because you're entirely missing the point being made.

If everyone who used the Bible was Christian, you'd have a hell of a lot of JRPG developers on board that we don't remember being there.

A better comparison might be the divisions in Jews; Ashkenazi and Sephardi are separate groups but both are still Jewish, as I understand it. Divisions rise out of nearly all religions; they're still covered under one umbrella term. Saying something like Protestant or Evangelical is just a more specific term.

[up][up]yes, your mother choosing not to do something gives you all the insight into the issue. And the other sides haven't been trying to have an honest conversation. God, you're an idiot.

Edit: And Gosnell is atypical of the usual abortion doctor, who wants to do the procedure in a safe, sanitary facility. What Gosnell is typical of is what women will face if abortion is outlawed, because they'll have no choice but to deal with the dishonest in many cases.

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) filed an amendment that would bar undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States from ever earning citizenship.

Dems And GOP Reps Battle In Benghazi Hearing Over Whether Dems Were Blocked From Witnesses

Honest conversations no longer exist in American politics (they may never have to begin with). Now both sides just yell and villainize each other until they are in position where they no longer have to pretend to care about what the opposition thinks. tongue

Or that he figures he has more to gain in texan votes from people who hate mexicans than he does to lose from pissing off every hispanic in the state.

The rising Hispanic population says otherwise. Much as they may like to pretend otherwise, millions of them are here legally and thus able to vote.

But if he passes enough anti-mexican bills he can maybe take away their right to vote and be a hero.

What sort of amendment is Cruz talking about? I know it won't pass either way.
