The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You know, I'd like to say that I'm surprised that in this day and age people can say crap like that, but unfortunately I'm not that naive.

I find it funny modern TV is already a den of hilarious indecency (I'm looking at you, Honey Boo Boo or reality tv) yet conservatives think laxing tv standards can make it any worse.

They seem to think that there exists only intention, and no such thing as unintended consequences. If you don't mean to do something, it won't actually happen. Also, all those things that people do that they're not supposed to do, they're just being tempted and giving into temptation, and if you erect barriers to their doing those things, such as threat of punishment, they'll stop doing them because they'll magically understand that they shouldn't and they will stop meaning to do those things, which will mean that they will stop happening.

So many awful things were done with the best of intentions. I don't mean to invoke Godwin's Law here, but I'm sure that even Hitler had good intentions for Germany before he went insane.

Good intentions mean zilch if the results are bad. Yeah, you can be sympathetic, but everyone should do their best to prevent good intentions from warping into something bad. It's, to me, something that should be part of being an adult.

No, you don't understand.

Bad things cannot arise from doing good. Good begets good, only evil can beget evil.

But an incorrectly calibrated moral compass can lead to disaster.

An incorrectly calibrated moral compass means that that person is not actually doing good anyway. He or she must be taught what is right and wrong, and then he/she will do no wrong anymore.

GOP Chairman forced to resign after stigma from openly supporting Gay Marriage.

Yes GOP, keep kicking out all your moderates and anyone who dares think we should treat people who are different as equals. That won't bite you in the ass.

I'm thinking this is going to be similar to the Dixiecrats being rejected from the dems and absorbed into the GOP.

A Texas State District Judge rules in favor of the cheerleaders of a SE Texas school who want to use Bible verses on banners at games.

...enbcouragement of what? taking bible verses entirely out of context to apply them to football?

Then let me ask this: if coorperations can take things like this out of context to sell a project, why can't a group of teens use it to be encourage their friends to do well?

because one isnt technically blasphemy against their own religion?

That, and I just fail to see what on earth out of the bible you can apply to a football game, but that may have something to do with me finding the entire Bible corny as all hell.

I really can't fathom how this is a problem in any way.

Many of those verses are only encouragement to do the right things anyway in context.

Also, remember, this is specifically for that team. Not to throw it other people's faces either.

It's not really a religious problem either. Even football and other teams yell "Thank you God!" when they score a touchdown. For giving them the strength to get it done. These are normal things that aren't related to "Separate of Church and State" either. People praise God or spread his word outside of Church, likewise, in some cases, it's used only for the purpose of doing mundane things. And it's really not wrong to do so either.

I guess? I just blame my personal misotheism streak towards christianity making me not really get it.

I think it's because a school is a state institution.

I'm...personally torn on this. It's harmless, but I'm afraid that it may be used for legal justification for things like creationism being taught as fact.

(Yes, that's a slippery slope argument.)

The Bible =/= Christianity. I use the Bible, and I'm Catholic specifically.

There's tons of things that use the Bible. Even if it's not in context, the purpose of it is to encourage people to do the right thing. That's the point of the verses.

It's only slightly out of context to a degree. But not as heavily as you think it is.

I can see the whole "blasphemy" thing, sure. But I think that would depend on how the Team views it. Also, being a Team, I'm sure they'll figure out neutral(as in statements that really don't feel like it's pushing Religion on other people) statements. Things like "Thou shalt not kill" isn't really specific to the Bible as is.(the exact wording, perhaps) Not exactly what they'll be cheering, but in the vein of that.
