Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016You know, I'd like to say that I'm surprised that in this day and age people can say crap like that, but unfortunately I'm not that naive.
Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite. They seem to think that there exists only intention, and no such thing as unintended consequences. If you don't mean to do something, it won't actually happen. Also, all those things that people do that they're not supposed to do, they're just being tempted and giving into temptation, and if you erect barriers to their doing those things, such as threat of punishment, they'll stop doing them because they'll magically understand that they shouldn't and they will stop meaning to do those things, which will mean that they will stop happening.
So many awful things were done with the best of intentions. I don't mean to invoke Godwin's Law here, but I'm sure that even Hitler had good intentions for Germany before he went insane.
Good intentions mean zilch if the results are bad. Yeah, you can be sympathetic, but everyone should do their best to prevent good intentions from warping into something bad. It's, to me, something that should be part of being an adult.

Yes GOP, keep kicking out all your moderates and anyone who dares think we should treat people who are different as equals. That won't bite you in the ass.

I have no use for such linear definitions of right and wrong.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.I'm thinking this is going to be similar to the Dixiecrats being rejected from the dems and absorbed into the GOP.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."
Umm, the Dems aren't going to take the guys the Republicans are offloading.
Re: Sanford - Oh Snap
I really can't fathom how this is a problem in any way.
Many of those verses are only encouragement to do the right things anyway in context.
Also, remember, this is specifically for that team. Not to throw it other people's faces either.
It's not really a religious problem either. Even football and other teams yell "Thank you God!" when they score a touchdown. For giving them the strength to get it done. These are normal things that aren't related to "Separate of Church and State" either. People praise God or spread his word outside of Church, likewise, in some cases, it's used only for the purpose of doing mundane things. And it's really not wrong to do so either.
Shadow? The Bible =/= Christianity. I use the Bible, and I'm Catholic specifically.
There's tons of things that use the Bible. Even if it's not in context, the purpose of it is to encourage people to do the right thing. That's the point of the verses.
It's only slightly out of context to a degree. But not as heavily as you think it is.
I can see the whole "blasphemy" thing, sure. But I think that would depend on how the Team views it. Also, being a Team, I'm sure they'll figure out neutral(as in statements that really don't feel like it's pushing Religion on other people) statements. Things like "Thou shalt not kill" isn't really specific to the Bible as is.(the exact wording, perhaps) Not exactly what they'll be cheering, but in the vein of that.
Shadow?

Ooook...that's going to be a circus. I see no way this is going to help anyone.
