The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

They've wanted to impeach Obama since before he took office. The Republicans are not rational.

I remember when we impeached the president that allowed an attack on our soil that killed over three thousand people. One of the reasons that the attack succeeded was due to spectacular lack of communications between departments.

What was his name again?

Yeah, GOP, it's not like an intelligence failure on your last President's watch got 3,000 Americans killed or anything.

And how many American diplomatic facilities were attacked/state department personnel killed during those eight years? And how many times did the Democrats raise hell over them for months on end?

Frankly, I don't recall vast inquiries over the attacks on diplomatic posts that occurred during the Bush years, mainly because the country was whipped into an anti-terrorist war frenzy to the point where criticizing the administration was un-American.

I'd be mildly annoyed, rather than utterly disgusted at the "Benghazi stupid" if they weren't being so very, very blatant in their hypocrisy, and had pressed Bush harder and tried to impeach him. At least then I could put it down to and honest, if overzealous desire the protect 'Merica against all reason.

As it is is, it's cheap, tacky pandering.

You know I'd like to believe that no matter how insane they act the GOP knows that Benghazi is pretty much a lost cause. They would have tried to start impeachment proceedings if they thought they had any ground to stand on, however slim.

They are building a narrative. Democratic administrations get savagely attacked for every perceived failure, and the lack of "substantive" response is proof that the system is corrupt and has to be overthrown. Meanwhile, all the commotion acts as a distraction from the President's legislative agenda and forces Democrats to concentrate on placating the media frenzy, lest they appear complicit through inaction. The inability to focus on substantive issues is then used by Republicans against the Democrats in elections — they had four years and look how little they accomplished!

It's a calculated plan to render Democratic Presidents unable to govern.

[up][up]I don't know. Given the fact that they never really raised a fuss over Bush's repeated blunders I'd assume they wouldn't make such a big deal out of it.

Democrats holler about stuff too, but they don't go into hardcore "refuse to govern" mode.

[up][up][up] Oh yes they did,....we're just not old enough to remember all of it. But I'll tell you one thing,no one let go of the whole Scooter Libby thing for a while.

That's really all Benghazi is,...just the GOP counterpart to Scooter-Libby,no one's gonna freaking remember it that isn't a partisan hack.

Christ on a bike.

The Heritage foundation recently released a "study" which suggested that "hispanics may never reach IQ parity with whites," among other really racist things. Sufficed to say, people are pissed and the conservative media groups are latching onto the report.
