The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So, seeing how no one else has mentioned it Rhode Island and Delware legalized same-sex marriage this week (Delaware did today in fact).

Update on the Sanford/Colbert election.

Sanford is barely leading.

conservatives. because even if the conservative candidate ran off to a mistress for 5 days on government money and abandoned his family to marry his mistress, he's still better than a filthy democrat.

Well that's unfortunate.

I notice Charleston and Dorchester haven't reported in a lot of their people. The latter is almost certainly going to him but the former looks like it could still pull for Colbert Busch. Would that be enough for her to win?

Doesn't look like it.

Fuck South Carolina for basically electing a criminal.

Hell the fact that Mark Sanford can get away with this, despite breaking his restraining orders, and yet Anthony Weiner isn't forgiven just expose the double standard of the GOP being forgiven all too easy.

#54185: May 7th 2013 at 5:37:39 PM

Wait, get away with what? I missed something didn't I? What did Sanford do?

His base forgiven Sanford despite the fact that he's a "family values" infidel who broke the restraining order his ex-wife had against him

Meanwhile, Anthony Weiner still catches flack.

Other than the whole lying about his use of government money to take a trip to Argentina to have an affair, then broke a legal restraining order against his jilted wife?

In fairness Mark did reimburse tax-payers for the expenses he had incurred on is eventful trip

And it not like Democrats haven't been willing to forgive certain candidate's digressions in the past (see Chappaquiddick) .

[up][up][up][up] He was hiking those Appalachian Trails. wink

EDIT: I wonder what Stephen's reaction to this will be.

EDIT 2: Final scoreboard:

Sanford: 54.3%

Colbert: 45.2%

Either way you're placing the rule of law, even shoddy law, over their lives.
Yup. Because it's not our country's job to be a safe haven for all residents of any region currently undergoing any sort of upheaval that makes living there dangerous. Certainly, the immigration rules should take such circumstances into account — and they do — but I don't think that we're obligated to allow people to break our laws just because they need help.

Of course, I certainly don't blame people for choosing to break our laws rather than face whatever horrible situation is happening in their place of origin. But neither do I think we should refrain from enforcing those laws.

I'm agreeing with @Jovian on this issue.

Senator Rockefeller is pressing major cruise lines on their health and safety standards after an incident earlier this year in which passengers on a ship experienced broken toilets and unsanitary conditions.

The trouble comes in in that they commit human rights violations during detention while deporting these individuals, and I think I've heard of a case where they ended up trying to deport someone who was a US citizen.

Oh, the US illegally deports hundreds of it's own citizens every year. Most of whom don't have the resources to fight it. This isn't new.

Well accidents are prone to happen. We accidentally jail people for crimes they don't commit, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying prosecute criminals.

The oil and gas industry is accusing the Obama administration of side-stepping its procedural rules and rushing a regulation on auto emissions.

Accidents are prone to happen, but in deporting US citizens they aren't even allowed a lawyer or a fair trial to defend themselves which really hurts their chances if they're flagged accidentaly. That's how they deported a US born citizen with no Mexican heritage to Mexico.
