Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Benghazi is a nothing. Republican politicians have decided to impeach every Democratic president on general principles.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Did they try to defend the Zerg a while back? They were never worthy of respect.
And I thought Huckabee used to be somewhat reasonable a few years back... but now he's drinking the far-right kool aid.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Actually that seems to be them misunderstanding the timeline and what was happening. There were two separate attacks eight hours apart. After the first Obama ordered the people to stand down. Eight hours later there was another attack which is when the people died. They seem to have misinterpreted/ignored this fact and are claiming it was one eight hour siege and Obama kept telling the troops to not get involved. It's a valid misunderstanding but they already explained this shit months ago so they have no excuse to keep using that argument.

Of course, a much better way to curb illegal immigration is to make the legal immigration process better, but that doesn't mean that illegal immigrants have a right to be in the country.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.![]()
In the midst of a discussion about combatting illegal immigration, I suppose I made an assumption. If he was actually talking about legal immigrants, I suppose I'll have to change my assessment of his point from "incorrect" to "irrelevant" as I'm not even sure why he'd bring it up given the conversation going on at the time.
I've always been fascinated by that line of thought since I often hear about how Mexicans are parasites that are feeding off the social services meant for "real Americans." Are they lazy freeloaders or are they stealing all the backbreaking factory and physical labor jobs? It can't be both yet somehow both are part of the party line.

They do a lot of the backbreaking labor for 2 reasons.
1: because a lot of companies literally have recruiters in border states ready to snatch up latinos and employ them at exploitative pay and hours under the implied threat of deportation if they snitch.
2: because even with those shitty conditions and pay, theyre still better off than in mexico/central america.
Nonetheless, the parts of mexican culturte americans are most familiar with are siestas, cantinas, and a horrifically warped Americanized version of Cinco De Mayo thats been reduced to nothing more than beer swilling parties.
Not to mention the average person cant tell the difference between Spain and mexican cultural things, apparently.
(yeah. being latino descent, this does annoy me a little given that means on my father's side I have both mexican and spanish blood in the ancestry)

It's a coherent train of thought? I thought it was just them flinging any insult they could come up with without caring if it makes any sense.
It's like how Obama is simultaneously a communist, Nazi, and Muslim. There's also the fact that he's either a colossal idiot that got the job by sheer blind luck/stupidity of the electorate or a Machiavellian mastermind that is slowly orchestrating the fall of America. The same people have called him all these things at various times despite the fact that they're insanely contradictory.
I know. I'm just saying that the kind of labor they do isn't exactly easy. They're not lazy by any stretch. I suppose you could make the argument that there are two main types of illegal immigrants but I've never seen them make that distinction. It's both at the same time and it applies to all of them, logic and reason be damned.

A big problem with the lazy illegal immigrant thing is mostly that an illegal immigrant can't apply for welfare or anything like that. They absolutely must work their butts off or they run into massive problems, that is, having no way of supporting themselves. Canada doesn't nearly have the same problem, but I've run into people complaining about 'lazy illegal immigrants taking all the jobs', including people who are second-generation welfare who make no effort to get jobs.
It's really hypocritical.
My response is usually something along the lines of, "Well, if you don't take the job, someone needs to."

paradoxically, some appear to think him winning might be helpful to Democrats.

That's it. Satire officially has no point. Reality has proven that it is to ridiculous to make fun of.
