The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Seriously, though, why on earth would anyone photoshop an image that could be so easily staged? Not to say that he did either of those things, but if you're going to call its veracity into question at least pick a more sensible MO.

Yeah, you don't generally photoshop something where you can just go outside and take a photo. It would be like me photoshopping the CN Tower into the view from my apartment. Oh wait, I can see it already, that would be a waste of time.

Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) just admits it.

Toomey said he initially thought there was enough momentum to get the bill passed in the Senate.

He noted that the National Rifle Association, which opposed this latest effort and which has previously given Toomey an “A-rating,” supported similar background check legislation when he voted for it in the House of Representatives in 1999.

However, the country has become so politicized, passing legislation on major issues is getting increasingly difficult, Toomey said.

“In the end it didn’t pass because we’re so politicized. There were some on my side who did not want to be seen helping the president do something he wanted to get done, just because the president wanted to do it,” Toomey said.

On a similar note, study finds conservatives less likely to pick energy efficient bulbs if they hear they will help the environment.

[up][up]Nugent I'm sick of you acting like you speak for soldiers. This country asked you to answer the call and you ran away. Coward.

I consider Arabic a separate race and to many people Arabic is synonymous with Muslim.

[up]@Toomey: Wow, my representative(At least I think he's mine. He could be one of the neighboring districts.) said something intelligent for once.

@lightbulbs: What. The. Fuck.

Why? I try really hard to tell myself that they're not just being malicious idiots, they're just ignorant, but then I hear that they do stuff like that. Even if you don't believe in global warming using energy efficient bulbs saves you money. I thought you believed in trimming excess whenever possible!

[up]Also, the guy equated Muslims to people trying to destroy the country and lumped them in with Mexicans. So what he really hates is brown people. Which is racism.

[down]Oh man, those comments are hilarious.

...if Obama gave a speech in favor of respiration we would have a one-party government within minutes.

That second story reminds me of something during the election season about how some porn star said he supported Romney.

Hahahah, Kostya's comment and that endorsement of Sanford fit together perfectly.

Poll: 29% Think Armed Rebellion Might Soon Be Necessary

The survey, aimed at measuring public attitudes toward gun issues, found that 29 percent of Americans agree with the statement, “In the next few years, an armed revolution might be necessary in order to protect our liberties.” An additional five percent were unsure.

Eighteen percent of Democrats said an armed revolt “might be necessary,” as compared to 27 percent of independents and 44 percent of Republicans. Support levels were similar among males and females but higher among less educated voters.

"Check that number again — 44 percent of Republicans polled, only a slightly smaller percentage than the number of people who thought Willard Romney should be president."

That's 44% of Republicans. Only 22% of Americans are Republicans so that's only around 10% of the population. Still stupid obviously but I honestly can't say I'm surprised.

Why am I not surprised?

Why? All those paranoid enough to stockpile weapons seem to think it's going to be the national military or other agencies coming after them. So like, they're waiting in with their paranoia and their MR Es and such.

It's not like there's much to mount an armed rebellion against in this country. Particularly since the art of protest is being practiced again. Although I guess if such a thing did happen, it would prove why the average civilian shouldn't have access to every kind of weapon.

That's not even remotely what I mean, and the primary purpose of those objects aren't to be weapons. I was referring to the time one of the Republican radio personalities or office holders said that citizens should have access to any weapon they can afford, up to and including nukes.
