The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Handle: Actually no because I'm too young to remember the Clinton Presidency.

Honestly if they had sufficient grounds to impeach Obama they'd have done it by now. They haven't though which means someone in the organization has enough of a brain to realize that they still don't have something big enough to risk their party's reputation on a trial.

Besides if he did lean more to the left and enact more liberal policies it wouldn't make him less popular and more likely to be impeached. Since a lot of Conservatives already think he is doing that.

[up]I honestly don't think so. Many of the things Obama wants to do are supported by the majority of the country. People have just been trained to see Obama's name and assume it's evil socialism even if it's something they previously supported.

Were Obama to go nuts with the liberal policies it might even improve his popularity after a time.

risk their party's reputation on a trial.

How? Doing so would be perfectly in-character and would surprise no-one. Those who'd despise them for it already do, those who'd support them wouldn't stop.

Anything they try to pin on him would be incredibly stupid and easily proven as false. They'd lose the trial and would like turn a lot of people off because their blatant insanity would be dragged into the forefront.

Take Benghazi for example. If they were to try and impeach him over that it would quickly come out that every single idiotic theory they have about it is wrong and they've been conducting a months long smear campaign over it solely out of spite. This might not change what the bases think of their own party but independents could become disgusted with them. That's something they can't afford right now.

edit: As I said, someone in a position of power knows this wouldn't work out well for them. Trust me, if they thought it would be to their advantage they'd have pulled something like this a long time ago.

It's important that the Clinton impeachment ended with Newt Gingrich's career in ruins.

And Clinton would be forever remembered as "the man who got his cock sucked in the oval office". For a long time, it was absolutely the only thing I ever knew about him.

[up]A lot of people still like Clinton though. He had approval ratings in the sixties and seventies for a good portion of his term. That's practically unheard of for Obama.

Speaking of low approval rating, what's the deal with Dubya week? Seriously, all the nice things they said about him... it was sickening. I frankly felt betrayed.

Upon checking my sources, I'll admit the discouraged workers statement was overstated, but still noticeable and bad enough to be very worried.

Bureau of Labor Statistics Monthly Labor Review, Mar 2013.

Page 12, chart 5. Since 2009, more of the unemployed have been leaving the labor force altogether than finding employment.

Page 15, chart 8. Compares labor participation and employment/population. The former has been falling steadily since 2009, while the latter hasn't really changed much.

Also of note, a good deal of our employment of late appears to be part-time, with a sharply increasing chunk of those employed part-time being so because it was all they could find (chart 6).

Really? That's a "gateway sexual activity"? Holding hands? I know it's something associated with couples, but people hold children's hands to prevent them from wandering away when it could be dangerous. Who came up with this bill? Anime high schoolers?

I know! Use those child leash things instead! That in no way whatsoever resembles anything even remotely sexual.

Seriously, you can construe literally anything as a "gateway sexual activity".

I get the feeling it meant holding hands with a significant other rather than holding hands in general. Agreed on just about anything being a "gateway sexual activity" though. I mean come on, you could argue that talking about your feelings qualifies because when you talk to people you make an emotional connection with them which increases the likelihood that you'll have sex.

I wouldn't put it past them to try and outlaw taking about your feelings, o wait that's already been done by banning teachers talking to gay kids about homosexual relationships.

I meant more along the lines of two teens that are dating just sitting down and spending hours talking about their views, ambitions, etc. As in the sort of thing that helps them bond and become closer to each other. When people are close with one another they are more likely to have sex therefore becoming emotionally close to someone you like is immoral.

"gateway sexual activity" officially beats the german officials "the maturity of sexual organs does not authorize taking them into service." from 1972.*

One of your Teeny magazines (the "Bravo") had a report on masturbation, to break the taboo with it in the "knowledge is better than ignorance" way, in 1972.

The issue of the magazine however was banned with "the maturity of the sexual organs does not authorize taking them into service" being the official reasoning from the "youth protection service." (I am not making this up.)

Until now, that was the highlight of officialese concerning sex I knew of...now it has been dethroned.
