The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Isn't that when we're finally fully getting out of Iraq?
Uh, we've been out of Iraq for more than a year. "The withdrawal of American military forces from Iraq was started in June 2009 and was completed by December 2011".

[up] I'm not a mind reader. tongue

And we didn't have much of a choice the second time either. World politics pretty much dictates that we retaliate against Bin Ladin for the actions of 9/11 or open ourselves up to be the target of every group that wants to show off.

Again, if we pull out before Afghanistan is rebuilt, we're only postponing the problem, whereas if we actually stay there and do our job we might get a long-term ally out of it.

Why do a few republican politicians call Obama a Muslim, (1. He isn't and 2.) even if he was their using that word as if it was the same thing as a terrorist) as if that religion alone was a bad thing yet if he doesn't mention God in a speech it is a "War on Christianity"?

Obama is far from perfect, but a lot of his detractors look far worse then he does.

Obama's worst points are mostly that he's kind of wishy-washy. He hasn't really done much except for Obamacare and he tends to capitulate. There isn't much to attack him with, because of a lot of his actions are kind of hard to put in a negative light, so most of it has to be manufactured by morons. Granted, there isn't that much to defend him with either.

[up][up][up]Because Muslims are EEEVILLL!!!

Seriously there's no other reason. It's just another convenient way to otherize him and say he's not a "real American."

edit: Well this should be interesting. It's not often that he goes on the offensive like that.

As a side not I'm confused by their usage of the word "campaign." Obama is not campaigning anymore so administration would be the appropriate term.

Oh my goodness! He might be MUSLIM (even though there's no evidence)! That's anti-American, a country built from people coming from all over the world. (Admittedly, there are some things in the Quran which are really unsettling for those who aren't Muslim) I'm just waiting for when a prominent Sikh is accused of being a terrorist because Turbans are Muslim, right?

@Zen: He helped end DADT, unemployment is down a little, (though I admit he wasn't the greatest contributor) and he was brave enough to finally come out in support of same sex marriage. His biggest problem I think is that he hasn't done enough and he has caved to Conservative pressure not to announce support for any side on a few social issues. He is wishy washy and I honestly wish we could have had a more liberal president who didn't keep his opinions to himself at the risk of offending future voters. Unfortunately that doesn't seem like it'll happen even if we elect a Democrat next term.

We should discourage that xenophobia though, and there are things in The Bible upsetting to non christian as well.

Zendervai: His middle name is Hussein and he's black. Surely he can't be an upstanding Christian!

Wildcard: Actually I'm pretty sure there are things in the Bible that would also be upsetting to Christians. We just don't always talk about those things.

@Obama's issues: Honestly I think his biggest problem is that he's a firm believer in the golden mean fallacy. He wants to be liberal on things like climate changes, tax rates, regulations, etc. but he views reaching across the aisle as more important. While I admire his ability to seek compromise even when his opponents are being batshit insane it's not a good quality when he's willing to sabotage good policies just to get bipartisan support.

The problem is, Obama isn't the president of the Liberals. He isn't even the president of those who voted for him, or even of those who voted, period. He's the president of every citizen in the USA. It's his duty to do what the majority wants, not what his voter base or sponsors want.

[up]Yeah I know. I think more liberal policies would not only make him more popular but also make this country better for everyone.

Even if he is an atheist it wouldn't matter, it wouldn't effect his abilities to govern.

@The Handle: His duty is to protect the Constitution and execute his duties as defined in that document. Given how many Americans seem to want to throw out bits like secular government and the right to vote, I'd be happy if he did the unpopular thing from time to time.

unemployment is down a little

Mostly because we have more discouraged workers that don't get counted. It's kind of like how we set the poverty line at a fraction of what's actually below living wage so we can say we have less poor people.

The Handle: Honestly I would say it's his duty to do the right thing even if the country doesn't want it.

Even so the majority of the country likes things like social security, gay marriage, increased background checks, higher tax rates, etc. The only reason these are issues is because one party has been taken over by the crazies in this country.

[up]Do you know of a study that actually says that's the reason? I've heard that that belief is wrong but I don't know of a source on it.

[up][up]Doing the unpopular thing as a president is like being rude on OTC. Not many of those thumps needed before an impeachment.

[up]Doing the unpopular thing is not the same as doing something illegal. You can only be impeached for doing stuff that is outright illegal.

edit: At best he just wouldn't win reelection but that doesn't matter now so his continued attempts at compromise prove he's just trying to be centrist for the sake of being centrist.

Remember back when Clinton tried to be seriously liberal, surrounded himself with people who were loyal to him, and went forth with some amazingly cool refomrs?

Yeah, that didn't last. And he almost got impeached for a bullshit reason.

[up]He could have "pleaded" the fifth.

Whenever people talk about Obama's religion I link this video.

But he could still totally be a MUSLIM/ATHEIST/SATANIST.

EDIT: Hoover, Truman, and W. did plenty of unpopular things during there presidencies and none of them got impeached.

EDIT 2: If anything Clinton was impeached for being to popular. His approval rating was over 60% when his impeachment trial started. The GOP had initiated an investigation (that ended up costing $40 million) of Clinton's personal dealings and relationships in order to find something to use against him.

[up][up]He signed DOMA. He was a reformer but not as much as he could have been. Even back then in the 90s he could've opposed that and most of the Democrats would agree as long as he didn't outright say he supported gay marriage.
