The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Hey, everyone? Bash Fox News all you like, but they're actually right on this one; any federal bill that gives special benefits to married individuals is discriminatory against homosexuals.

No more or less than any other benefit given to married people that is not given to non-married people. It seems to me like, in this case, rather than that bill being discriminatory against gays, that's just an extension of the lack of same-sex marriage being discriminatory against gays. If anything, this is discriminatory against non-married couples, gay or straight.

They're right only accidentally, and Fox News and the rest of the right wing media machine have been campaigning against giving gays the right to marry. That's why it's so fucking hypocritical of them to report and comment on the issue in this fashion.

Hypocrisy or not, stopped clock or not, I agree with Silasw. Congratulate their correctness...and therefore, "so let's let gay people get married."

If Fox News wants to temporarily support a meme that they've been opposing for their own purposes, then let's shove it right up their collective ass.

Regarding the myth that people become more conservative as they get older... that's because the definition of conservative charges overtime. When reformers/liberals/progressives/whatever succeed in their agendas their beliefs become the status quo and a few decades down the road they support and seek to defend it, likely opposing the next generation of progressives.

People who support same sex marriage now are not likely to oppose it down the line. When they are 50 they might well oppose whatever civil rights issue is going on then, they'll be the conservatives in that case but they won't magically oppose their own damn achievements.

Well some people might do that but they'd be a small number of older people.

So what rights issue will become the main thing after homosexuals are granted full rights? The only thing I can think of is transgender rights. I wonder what most young people think of that.

Kind of hard to predict. Ask someone during the civil rights movement and homosexuals probably wouldn't have been their first guess.

Throwing my speculation hat on I'd wager it'll have to do with illegal immigration and how many are treated like second class citizens at best and criminals at worst. I'd guess it would have to do with getting illegals some form of citizenship that's easy to revoke. Sort of "you're an american till we can find a reason for you not to be"

And Murkowski does not really count as a member of the Senate GOP; she's practically a dinosaur now.

She supports campaign finance reform because she has nothing to hide; everyone in Alaska knows that she represents the Native Corporations, and we love her for it.
