The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] Yup. The Republican party, Christie aside, have a bizarre hate-on for FEMA.

Honestly, both parties treat FEMA as a bit of a joke/bad thing...until they need it.

Its not bizarre.

It follows perfctly from republican logic that private contractors could somehow coordinate and clean up disasters faster and better. also jorbs.

There's a rational debate to be had about the proper role of the federal government in various things. Rubio seems to be alluding, however obliquely, to the fact that the GOP has over the past 30-40 years been the party of big federal deficits.

Still, one of the government's key roles is to be the "last resort" for shit hitting the fan. It's the lender of last resort, the borrower of last resort, the spender of last resort, the insurer of last resort, the employer of last resort... that's why we have it in the first place.

@ FEMA: The Republican Party's dislike for FEMA could also be connected with several disproved yet persistent Conspiracy Theories associated with the Agency.

I think conspiracy theorists tend to fly libertarian actually. Although Ron ran as a republican so I don't even know what the hell is going on with libertarians anymore.

Libertarians typically vote Republican because they're the most inline with their values and very few people are willing to run as a third party. Paul ran as a Republican because that would get him noticed, but he's openly Libertarian regardless.

I wonder if Perry is going to get Christie'd because he thanked Obama.

EDIT: This Hill article is pathetic. What kind of journalism is it to omit the polling results showing support for the measure?

Will somebody tell me what was wrong with the 50's-60's where for the most part there was agreement that the government isn't all bad and can do stuff to help the people. Seriously the Kennedy-Nixon debate looks so similar

The Southern Strategy paved the way for antigovernment rhetoric, as a generation of racist whites fleeing the Democratic Party saw the federal government as the guys who made them sit next to black people on the bus.

Considering how expensive international shipping charges can be, I'm failing to understand how applying sales taxes to in-country companies across state lines will actually hurt business all that much. Besides, moving to avoid such things is another symptom of the whole outsourcing issue, far as I can tell.

We generally expect something better from our senators than for them to use memes as responses to things that happen while at work. At least, we used to.
