The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

About Baucus: He's talking about people not understanding it? Yeah, that will need a bigger effort than what Sebelius can do.

About Cruz-Coats-Grassley, the Toomey-Manchin bill for reference. Can't find their bill here.

About the size of the bill: Yeah, comprehensive immigration overhaul is long.

[up] Concerning the Alternative Gun Bill: Surprisingly, that actually seems like a reasonable alternative and not a batshit crazy idea,...misguided though. Although the across the state lines part sounds like a backfire.

Wow, I'm watching the president's speech right now about the gun thing, and I don't think I've ever actually heard him be mad like this.

Well. That's ugly. I'm going to round up some of my penii, and protest this shit.

Hey! Penises would be the proper latin plural, not penii! It's obviously third declension. Penii would only be proper if it was penius not penis, thus putting it in second declension, not third.

If women are vaginas and men penii, does that make this guy an anus?

"Shameful day for Washington" is certainly the most succinct way of putting it.

And let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)

Their state legislature is too damn big. I don't remember the exact size but there aren't enough sane people to fill it.

How big can it be? I mean, the state is the size of a particularly large shopping mall, isn't it?

I just checked. 400 House members and 24 Senators. In a state with only 1.3 million people, they have the fourth-largest English-speaking legislative body in the world.

So, like one in every 250 300 or so people is a voting member of the state Congress? That's... a bit much...

It's a strange place, to be sure. I grew up and went to High School in NH. It's got some very sharp divides between demographics.
