Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's Abbot. Paranoia is expected.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Silas, as a Texan who votes Democrat, I find that an incredibly odd statement. It's not like Texas democrats have the ability to order missiles to be shot anywhere. And certainly democrats can't currently hurt Texas anymore than Republicans and their policy of cutting Planned Parenthood and education spending are at this point in time.
Besides, the threat of turning Democrat is specifically because people like Abbott are doing damage. Both to Texas and to the Republican reputation by continuing bad behavior.
North Korea can't order missiles shot at Texas anymore then Democrats can, in fact as there are Democrats in Texas they are more likely to be able to gain access to a missile that could hit Texas then North Korea is. The guy is technically right, but only in the sense that North Korea is so tiny a threat to Texas that anything within Texas is a bigger threat then North Korea. Brownies are a bigger threat to Texas then North Korea, but that's because North Korea isn't a threat to Texas, not because Brownies are.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI thought the brownies reference was about rising obesity rates. Texans have to watch their diet too.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.Brownies
. Which... is also one of the reasons why Girl Guides were called that... 'cos it's cute. And, they're meant to be helpful.
And, Fairy-lore was big when they were being created.
And, of course... the uniform. Yup: puns.
Also linked to food, beyond the chocolate brownie.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSomeone is an idiot if they think that every piece of mail sent anywhere near the President or his family isn't carefully screened.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I can just imagine some fanatical domestic terrorist types chuckling over how "this is the day" for their revolution to begin. Reality has a way of deflating such lofty expectations.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I remember in the Tom Clancy novel Executive Orders he devotes an entire (irrelevant) subplot to taking the piss out of a pair of right wing militia fanatics who build a fertilizer bomb in a cement truck and drive all the way to Washington to assassinate the President... only to be detained in Maryland due to an ebola outbreak. They get found out when their truck starts to stink of ammonia.

Schild und Schwert der ParteiThere was a message there; it wasn't just an irrelevant side plot. The Iranian mastermind (whose name I forget how to spell) laments at the start of the novel that if all of these would-be plotters and terrorists would only coordinate with each other, they could be much more effective.
The fact that he didn't know about the militia's assassination plot prevented him from adjusting his plans to abet it, with the result that they got caught. You have to Fridge Brilliance that a bit, though, as it isn't explicitly stated.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I also find that subplot ironic because Ryan is explicitly presented as a "man of the people" who isn't corrupted by Washington and has the Constitution and individual rights firmly in mind — as close to an ideal conservative president as it's possible to get — and the Right Wing Militia Fanatics see only "another freedom hating bureaucrat" that they want to kill.
This is getting off topic, though.
