The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Elizabeth Warren is awesome. Watch her go after bank "regulators" with both barrels.

In other news, a petition to designate the Wounded Knee Massacre Site as a national monument has been opened. I'm wondering who opened it and if it will get more exposure. After Idle No More began in Canada, I was wondering to what degree Native American issues had fallen off the map in the U.S.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

CA didn't already do the statewide ban? I mean, it's been a thing in San Jose for a year or so now, but I thought it was the whole state. Oh well, hopefully that goes through. It's been working out great for San Jose.

...It's a shame that his presidential campaign went down the tubes during the primaries. He'd make a better president (in my opinion) than Obama.

I really wish the GOP at least acknowledged that their "conservative principles" like being against gay marriage or wanting religion taught in schools aren't going to win them elections with the whole country and instead at least try to have a "live and let live" attitude about things.

They can't, because theit entire strategy consists of highlighting those things to get the base fired up with moral outrage.

I wouldn't say that. I think their main strategy right now is saying how much better in power they'd be for the economy than Barack Obama. Unfortunately they are still trying to keep votes for the people against gay marriage, religion taught in schools, etc even though they are starting to alienate people who used to be on their side.

Why can't they just say "I believe what they are doing is immoral but I have no legal precedence to stop it." Or something to that effect? It might gain back a couple of voters even if it might lose a few as well.

Because it'll gain back voters for the general elections, sure. But the more vitriolic side of the party is the part that shows up to primaries.

So you either appear to be drinking the koolaid at all times or doom yourself to be primaries out by another republican willing to.

Is there a way that can not be the case? I mean if this continues if a conservative is elected to office as president next term they might do everything in their power to keep the social issues of this country the same, or make them more restrictive.

the most obvious solution is figuring out some way to get more people to vote in primaries. As the mass turnout of the most motivated and vitriolic voters is one of the biggest factors forcing the republicans so far right

How though? A lot of people don't care about voting in the primaries.

Not really. Primaries are kind of usually seen as a thing nobody has time to bother with,

It may be common knowledge, but it's deniable common knowledge. It's sort of like a conspiracy theory in that regard in that, while it lurks in people's heads (Who Shot JFK?), there is no official legitimacy to it. Giving it an official imprimatur makes it impossible for those in power to ignore as the ravings of lunatics.

Who's denying it? I thought the problem was a lot of people are ok with it because it's not happening to them.

I'm not okay with it, but frankly there are bigger problems to deal with. It certainly looks like we aren't going to get any administration, Republican or Democrat, that doesn't partake in anti-terror activities, so it doesn't factor into my vote.

The shoring up part for Obamacare sounds good, but I fear the "moving from the slush fund" bit is going to fuck over other major portions of the law. Though it does sound like the Republicans are realizing the writing's on the wall for getting rid of that law.
