The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I've walked through that area a countless number of times. It's such a horrible and surreal sight to see that corner become the site of a bombing.

Let's not speculate wildly with so little evidence. For all we know, this could have been an assassination on someone in the area, and the terrorist attack pattern is to throw off investigators. There's going to be all sorts of noise on the net in the next two weeks, complete with conspiracy theories and false flag accusations, and I for one don't intend to contribute to it.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

The Boston Marathon, while moderately popular among fans of that sort of thing, is still not a big blip on the radar. So yeah, I'd be surprised if it wasn't domestic in origin.

If it was right-wing nuts though, I'd have thought they'd likely have pushed the attack back to the 19th, which is a lot more symbolic in that regard.

Eyewitnesses have apparently reported a smell of "cordite and gunpowder" in the wake of the explosions.

Separate explosion hits JFK Library, according to Russia Today.

Uh-oh. Russia Today is not the most credible source, however. Let's wait for confirmation.

If it is true, condolences to any involved.

No, it's come from Reuters. Just came up on the BBC stream too.

The FAA has instituted a no-fly zone around the site for all traffic under 3,000 feet in altitude.

After reading a bit, I thought it might've been a malfunction of some confetti cannons. Don't they have those? Or maybe I'm just being hopeful.

[up][up][up][up]BBC says that's where the second explosion happened. The first was at the hotel.

[up][up]That injured over twenty people? I don't think the cannons are powerful enough for that.

Sky is reporting it as a third blast. The JFK Library is about 5 miles from the hotel.

They're saying twenty-three injured but the numbers given by the hospitals add up to over 30.

edit: BBC is talking to a witness that's a veteran. He says he definitely smelled cordite which is used in explosive materials. He also thinks it was an attack on the spectators given the location of the bomb.

This close to the incident any figures are going to be sketchy.

Perhaps they are distinguishing between injured and seriously injured.

Apparently some of the Newtown families were seated less than ten meters from the site of the first explosion. The last mile was dedicated to them. Dear God - I hope they are safe.

This is scary. I hope no more are hurt or killed.

I imagine it was picked out as a target because it would be crowded there and the bomber intended to kill many.

Targeting the JFK Library makes it almost certain to be right-wing domestic terrorism. Why would international terrorists go for that?

[up][up][up][up]

is it awful that the first thought to come to mind for a domestic terrorist incident based in that would be to kill people who are at best tangentially related to gun control?

Can we try to stick to information we can confirm and verify from external sources for now please? Rampant speculation is not going to help matters.
