Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Ann Coulter Battles Grover Norquist: Immigrants Only Help Businesses Who ‘Benefit From Slave Labor’
Yeah, they're kinda missing the point. "All these poor people are being horrifically exploited...so we should throw them back somewhere worse."
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.
... So living in any country that isn't the US is worse than being exploited?
Edit: I mean, if it's Somalia, or some other warlord controlling third-world country, sure... But just living in Canada/Mexico is worse than being exploited in the US? I love the US, but I'm not that in love with my country...

Illegal Immigrants who are being exploited in the US are free to leave at any time. The fact that they stay there shows that being exploited is obviously preferable to returning back to there own countries.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016The funny thing is, conditions in the USA don't necessarily have to be better than in Mexico (I've never been to either country, so I've no way to compare); the simple perception of 'the American Dream' and hope of making it big could keep people staying in the USA even if conditions are worse for them than they would be in their home country.
Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.Who immigrates illegally from Canada? I honestly don't see the point.
Anyway, a possible way to deal with illegal immigration might to find out why the immigrated, and if it was for work, allow them to get a green card. They've proven they can work, and they live there already, so why not?

The biggest reason: The moment they become legal citizens, they'll want a fair wage*. At which point they'll be fired in favor of a new illegal immigrant that'll take the lower wage...
Which, essentially, creates what the GOP red-neck racists have been complaining about all along: a new citizen losing a job in favor of an illegal that took it...

Canada is one thing, but Mexico is kind of in the middle of a massive drug war where you can pretty safely assume any given government official or law enforcement to be ridiculously corrupt because drug cartels have been wholesale murdering the ones who aren't. To say nothing of the human trafficking, forced labor rings, or how the murder rate has gone up by over six times in the last decade alone as people get caught in the crossfire.
So yeah, I wouldn't at all blame an illegal immigrant for thinking it's preferable to be exploited for unfairly low pay.

Yeah, Mexico is about a few major gang wars away from becoming a failed state tbh.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this. For perspective, the annual rate of murder in Mexico directly related to the drug war is about equal to the US's total murder rate (absolute, not per capita). They have a third of the population.
They also happen to have stricter gun laws than us. While not indicative of guns = !murder, it certainly kicks !guns = !murder in the balls.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016The Obama's tax returns for 2012
And Joe Biden's
Tax Returns.
Actually, it isn't, really. Now, if one compared it to a country with a similar infestation of gangs and whatnot or if you compared a country without such infestations with the US, and you found that the one with stricter gun regulation to have a higher or equal murder rate, that would be a piece of evidence to show that stricter gun regulation does not yield less murder. It only kicks !guns = !murder if you are disregarding the effects of other stuff, such as the drug cartels which have infested Mexico like a termite infestation as a result of the War on Drugs™.
Santorum hospitalized, cancels trip to Iowa

Am I wrong for thinking that would be an awesome game and they should release it on Steam?
