Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

...How is that new? We've known that since the beginning. They like the cuts and hate the tax increases.
I stated my position in an earlier post. Forced participation is wrong (unless it saves lives or is necessary to keep the country functioning).
And (as you know) Healthcare saves lives. So I rebuff you accusations of Hypocrisy.

Remember the House still needs to vote on it. It's times like this that I'm glad our legal system goes as fast a bloated slug.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016I'm sorry to turn things back to mandatory voting but I have another point. If millions of people are forced to vote and check a box that says they don't like any of the candidates the major and minor parties will have hard data on how many people they're not reaching. They might start paying attention to these people and try to court them so the other side doesn't get them. I can't see how this isn't good for democracy.

Why shouldn't it be mandatory?
Give a reason other than "it's bad" or "it abridges freedom."
That's meaningless.
Do you disagree that mandatory voting will lead to a more truly representative democracy?
If you don't, do you disagree that a truly representative democracy is generally better than a non-representative one?

How does not voting if you don't care enough to get informed undermining the basis? The people voting care enough obviously and their are lots of them.
No it is meaningless to make it mandatory. It won't make people care, and it is still wrong. Voting is a right and as a right you don't have to use it. Besides mandatory voting won't get made into a law anyway.

Explain why this is undesirable without using "meaningless" terms like "freedom" or "liberty".

The government is not affect by your wardrobe. Your wardrobe doesn't affect other people. Voting affects everyone. Therefore, the government can legislate on it. (Traffic laws, anyone?)
Explain how the harm of mandatory voting would be greater than the benefits.

If you don't care about politics, then frankly that's your fault.
If you've come to the conclusion that all the candidates standing are spineless running-dogs of the corporations or something, then spoil your ballot - that's a perfectly valid way of participating, since you are actively sending a message that none of the candidates represent your views.
Now, you can say that many people simply don't have the time or energy to learn about politics, and you'd be right, and that's a indictment of the education system (for general politics) and capitalism-as-practiced (for specific policies or candidates). That is a difficult issue, and a problem to be solved, but any argument along these lines amounts to 'lol the poor shouldn't vote'.

Have you seen a Police Helicopter? They've got cameras on them...
Its nothing new.
