Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Getting depressed doesn't solve anything. Organizing, getting your voice heard by the Washington pols representing you, getting others to understand what they need for an informed vote in a couple years time - that might.
She of Short Stature & Impeccable Logic My Skating LiveblogThis is really a cause for organizing protests. OWS was able to move a million or so in a number of major cities, right? Five million on the Mall telling O to forget CPI might get the point across.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Ryan Says He's 'Cautiously Optimistic' On A Bipartisan Budget Deal
I...don't like this. At all. Frankly, I'd be much more comfortable if he was saying there was no way in hell. Ryan's the worst sort of extremist, and part of the cancer that's killing /b/
/cough
I mean America.

Other than the fact that it wasn't on the President's order, there isn't one. It's material stolen from the opposition and aired to sabotage them. The fact that you approve of it doesn't magically make it legally gray enough to wishy-wash around.

What we've got with Obama is a standard case of 1979 Jimmy Carter, all bad moves attempting to please everyone and pleasing no one.
If George W Bush was George Bush with two terms and idiocy cranked Up To Eleven,Obama is a two-term Jimmy Carter in almost every way imaginable except less competent and without a sane foreign policy.
Same dark horse entry, same affable but uncharismatic opponent that was considered too liberal by the GOP,same absolute failure to really do too much in execution, same "it's the other guys fault" tactics to get in.
That or Obama genuinely is the most conservative Democrat since Grover Cleveland
That's my best guess on why this crap is happening.
Obama is unique in that no other president in recent history has faced this sort of Congressional obstruction. He has made or attempted to make genuinely centrist/progressive moves but the GOP quashes both them and any procedural thing he tries to do that might make him and the Dems look good. So the economy isn't in great shape and he's backed into a corner (until the public throws out the GOP House majority/maintains Democratic control of the House, which is uncertain on a good day), so I can at least understand where he is coming from. I don't like what he is doing but maybe he is just trying to keep the Dems viable and hopes the public will give him a better Congress?
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I'm more confident about 2016, the Dems get a better turnout during presidential elections and they have some good candidates in the wings. Plus they will be defending fewer Senate seats and maybe demographics will shift enough to gain more ground in the House. Not sure though.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I'll be fair and say that Obama's opposition in the legislature has been unusually obstructionist. We didn't even have this magnitude of "stonewall EVERYTHING" in the years leading up to the Civil War; even they could agree and compromise on side issues and everyday tangential stuff.
Still, buckling to them is the worst thing he could be doing.

The thing about Dems having a better turn out during presidential elections really frustrates me. I mean, it's not like things only happen in major election years, so why isn't the public paying attention in the years between those? For that matter, how do we get people to realize that and go vote for Congressional representatives in the odd years?
And Jesus Christ, wouldn't that just be the greatest plot for a Twilight Zone episode?

You're buying into the racist rhetoric that Obama only won because of his skin color there, Thorn. That's not a good place to be, for several reasons.
It also doesn't address the fact that this isn't unique to the last few rounds of elections to begin with, so...

That was the entire grand bargain to begin with. His idea. His policy. His goal.
And the poster above me needs to be more depressed. 😡
