Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Reposting because it got buried PDQ.
So, miffed that some judges are having the AUDACITY to BLOCK these VERY IMPORTANT (in keeping democrats from voting) LAWS, WI GOP state legislators are trying to neuter their effectiveness.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016@Fighteer: The problem with gun control is that the attempts in the 1990s really did go completely out of control, and a lot of voters still are a bit wary of that. Any bill that bans "assault weapons" or "Saturday Night Specials" (that was slang from the '90s for easily-concealed handguns) will inevitably be poorly-worded as hell and applied in an overly-arbitrary manner.
And I will say this: The NRA has history on their side when they suggest "background checks will lead to THEM COMIN AFTER OUR GUNZ AND OUR FREEDOM!!!!!" Why? Because after the Brady Bill (federal waiting period, background checks, banning felons from carrying firearms; one stupid provision does in fact cover individuals who have not been convicted of anything, but restraining orders are another subject entirely) passed, HCI immediately started pushing for Brady Bill II, which had stuff like assault weapon legislation, Saturday Night Special bans, punitive taxes on all guns and especially ammo, and I don't remember the rest. It was an ungodly mess.
So the NRA does have a point in that, if they refuse to compromise at all and prevent the nation from having a conversation on gun control, they have a better chance of keeping gun laws from going somewhere actually harmful. Of course, they also ensure that nothing beneficial can be done either.
@Enkufka: I wonder what would happen if that law was struck down?

@Sledgesaul: Because the actively destructive minority will, eventually, become too small to dominate our politics.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016It makes his CPI plan seem like a major concession instead of the minor baby step Republicans claim it is.
“We’re not going to have the White House forever, folks. If he doesn’t do this, Paul Ryan is going to do it for us in a few years,” said a longtime Obama aide, referring to the 2012 Republican vice presidential candidate who proposed a sweeping overhaul of Medicare that would replace some benefits with vouchers.
This...this is baffling.

What idiots is he surrounding himself with? Is this what happens to an administration that is willing to let people like Van Jones resign when people start throwing some nasty names? Really?

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.I still wonder if he's trying to expose their hypocrisy in some way. If so he's doing it in a really stupid way.
edit: Okay what aides are saying this? Are we sure these are his own words?

Krugman thinks
that Obama is still trying to reach out to the Cult of Centrism in the vain hope that it will stop declaring him unwilling to compromise.
But the truth is that the “centrists” aren’t sincere. Calls for centrism and bipartisanship aren’t actual demands for specific policies — they’re an act, a posture these people take to make themselves seem noble and superior. And that posture requires blaming both parties equally, no matter what they do or propose. Obama’s budget will garner faint praise at best, quickly followed by denunciations of the president for not supplying the Leadership (TM) to make Republicans compromise — which means that he’s just as much at fault as they are, see?
After all, there's no way that the GOP will pass any Obama budget proposal that isn't a total capitulation to Paul Ryan's Assrape America plan. Still, all this "peace offering" does is make him look weak.
