The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I wonder what effect this will have on the Democrat's and the Obama administration's popularity. This is the kind of thing I really suck at predicting.

If those NC Republicans are being honest about using 2014 as a way to find out who needs ID... that's the way to go about these. By I'm not a trusting man when it comes to these kinds of things so I say they are guilty until proven innocent in this case.

I fall in the left quadrant. I much prefer square to diamond since it's more space saving with rectangular screens like computers, though I prefer axes to squares or diamonds.

@Kostya: "Christianity is freedom" works if you consider humans to be bound by their sinful nature. (Further discussion probably belongs in the theology thread.)

Also that it had elements of mild rebellion against corrupt authority, albeit more against existing temple hierarchy than Roman occupation.

Though early christian communes were organized in anarchically, so, according to that chart, they should be skeletons.

They'd be pretty much all over that chart depending on when in history you asked. We haven't exactly been the most consistent bunch.

Since when is Christianity identified with libertarianism? Most of the people considered the founding Parents of libertarian philosophy, with the exception of Isabel Paterson, were atheists or agnostics, Rand being the most vocal example of this. And Anarchism I would say is neither left nor right.

Sort-of off to the side and in a different category of its own, right?

So-called "anarcho-capitalism" however, is clearly on the right side of the political spectrum.

That chart is the sort of hash you end up with when both your criteria and measurement tools are way too crude and one-dimensional to do the job—or even properly describe the job. (There's a moral there, if any Paul fans care to take it.)

[up][up][up],[up][up][up][up] Anarchism is more left-wing than right-wing. I mean, we're all socialists and we all advocate the abolition of private property.

[up][up] And all other anarchists spend a lot of time trying to distance ourselves from them since, well, they're not really anarchists. They oppose the state, sure, but that's not all there is to anarchism. Plus, rather than merely eliminating the state, the privatize the state, even by their own definition of state.

[up] The moral here is: Ron Paul fans say the darndest things.

Since when is Christianity identified with libertarianism?

Since the first couple centuries AD. More recently and relevantly (1950's Latin America), liberation theology, an attempt to return to political decentralization of the early church.

Like I said, depending on who and when you ask, Christianity can hit anywhere on that chart.

When I think of Christianity's political views in the modern day I think of a culture that's restrictive to women(in the case of Catholics), homophobic, anti-drug, and anti-abortion. None of those promote freedom in any way and they're pretty big beliefs. It's not like they're tiny side things.

That's called Christian Dominionism. It's not exactly representative of the belief as a whole.

I know there are different groups but if you're asked where the major groups fall most will be some form of authoritarian rather than libertarian.
