Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

... And the voter base is OK with this? Or is it that there are more Republican-leaning voters in those places than Democrat-leaning ones?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Well fuck you too Steve Cookson.
. It's not like poor people ever suffer from crippling illnesses.
I understand the idea behind it, as you do get families who think education is useless, but the execution is awful. Just add a clause about illness if excused by a reputable and recognized doctor and that would solve a lot of problems.
Wait, that might not be an option for a lot of people. The best way to fix this requires health insurance for those in the lower class, but it isn't possible for many right now.
What is up with your state? Is it something in the water?
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.
Its pretty much the same thing as a lot of other states full of crazy.
we have 3 major cities that are full of progressives and centrists.
That are constantly outvoted by 50+ counties of smalltown rural christian republicans who live in small enough towns that minimum wage is actually a livable salary and therefore dont understand just what crushing poverty looks like.
The Tea party is rather in vogue, too.

If the Democrats manage to gain back Congress in 2014 the Tea Party will likely lose steam. Losing the midterms against the incumbent president in his 6th year is something that would bring one in serious trouble.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016I apologise if this has already been posted, but what the fuck - http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2013/04/05/georgia-students-fight-segregated-proms/
Apparently, segregation is still legal in Georgia...
My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username.
Apparently the prom isn't technically a Wilcox County High School event (my old school used the same con for our leaver's dance - it meant they didn't have to organize it and we could raise hell without consequences for them), and so technically the organizers are holding two separate private events in which the invitees are only of one race. Is segregation actually legal in Georgia or is this just Loophole Abuse?

Posting this because of comments about class warfare. Hopefully the lawmaker doing this will gain some useful insight and experience. And I'm also hoping that other lawmakers will try this, though I'm not holding my breath.

And this just pisses me off to no end. There is a reason why I'm putting the blame mostly in Republicans when stuff isn't happening. Chained CPI is still stupid, though, and I don't know why Obama's still batting that idea around.

This is just kind of amusing in a schaudenfruede kind of way.

Sounds like massive loophole abuse, as well as complete asshattery.

I assume nobody mentioned it because it's kind of well-known that the GOP is trying to not so stealthily rig the electoral system in favour of itself. Even our local newspaper ran a line about this last year.
