Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That reminds me. Now that Brown is no longer running in Massachusetts, who is going to take his place?
@ Starship: I mentioned this in the economics thread, but (to give an example) a 60% income tax rate on income over $1 million would not mean that the government takes $600,000 for every million you make.
It means that they take 60% of every dollar you make past $1 million. If we pretend that there are only two income brackets (0% for income under $1 million and 60% for income above $1 million), a person making $1,000,100 would only pay $60.
Closing tax loopholes, as mentioned, would hurt more than help, as said loopholes are designed to help the poor and to reward spending that benefits society. There are some harmful ones, but they're a drop in the bucket compared to the harm that would come from removing them all.
Going after offshore accounts, as mentioned, would require acts of aggression against other nations.
Eliminating all wasteful spending would be nice, but at the moment the Democrats are the lesser of two evils on that front.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Basically... I guess I appreciate your efforts to make it convenient to read up on all the news. The issue is that, this is not just a news dump, but a discussion. So when a link is posted, the expected response is to talk about its contents unless otherwise specified.
So a red flag is raised whenever I see an abortion link. Sure someone might say "Oh look at those guys trying to restrict abortion again" But what if I or someone disagrees with that, and thinks it's a good thing? Why should that someone be allowed to post self-standing "remarks" like they're a given?
If the other, anti-abortion "side" proceeds to make its own such remarks, then that's not a conversation at all. That's just two groups of posters being opinionated. If they try to reply to one another, it starts off an unwanted abortion derail for a short while before it's stopped again.
That could be a problem.

Come on, memorizing a few select legalese phrases in Spanish should not be that hard.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.
Immigrants come from all over, Spanish ain't the only necessary language there. And some of the languages could be rather obscure and hard to obtain a translator for. But, yeah, if you need consent, that means they've got to understand what they're agreeing to.
