Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You could get the UK to shut the dam things down ourselves if we weren't afraid the money would just flee to other havens. that's the problem, even if you shut down all the British and similarly controlled havens, you've still got the ones in places that are much less friendly and more likely to shoot and US troops coming in.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranEh, hit-and-run is still not diplomatically sound, and US is already getting bad rep for invading before we have better justification.
I'm wondering just how much of the talk we had about taxation really relates to this thread, and I'm wondering if we should move it. But at the same time, the thread we move it to may have different standards.
What might be a more efficient solution is to lean on Britain. Many tax havens are British overseas territories, and, since, legally-speaking, the British government recognizes no limit to its territorial or legal sovereignty, not to mention that "Parliament can make or unmake any law it likes" (because fuck checks and balances)note , means that Britain could simply either order them to raise taxes, abolish their legislatures and impose direct rule, incorporate them into the UK proper as parliamentary constituencies, or offer them independence (and thus force them to act like an actual nation, rather than a tax haven that has all of its foreign and much of its domestic expenses paid by the British taxpayer, i.e me).
Schild und Schwert der ParteiYeah, that's "What's really stopping a President from sending the Marines to the Cayman Islands", the fact that it's British territory and you'd be invading an ally. Get us to shut them down and you're good to go. We don't like them either, I assume we just keep them round so the money doesn't run to other tax havens.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSo we'd need a progressive Democrat in the White House with the support of both houses of Congress, and...wait, is there a party in Westminster that'd be willing to work with a president on such a venture? I'm sure Old Labour would love it, but they don't run Labour anymore.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this. Can we move this particular tax argument to another thread? It's drowning out everything else.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff. Please, it would mean more money for the British government (we don't get money from the tax havens either, in fact they drain us to), any party would agree to it, the Civil Service would make them. But look at the Wikipedia list of tax havens, even if you close all the US and UK ones (there are plenty of US ones), you've still got Italian ones, Dutch ones, UAE ones and 8 entire countries. Good luck. That's the problem, it's like nuclear weapons. We aren't gonna give up our tax havens unless everyone else gives up there's.

We do have an Economics thread.
Not a mod or a herald but I just want to point out the longstanding tradition in that thread. The norm is to write posts that contribute to the conversation, or to learn/teach and discuss economic ideas. It's not a place to complain about the woes of the bureaucrats or anything, even if it's true. It's not IJBM.
Unfortunately, talk in this thread has (naturally) not been always like that. So if you're going to continue this in the economics thread, please respect how that thread works. Don't just migrate this conversation there copy-paste style and continue to treat that thread the same as this thread. I know this thread's more tolerant of loose remarks; not so much there.

Those aren't similar at all. The "truth" that all rich people made it from stocks is almost completely false — barely 3% of them did. The "truth" that 47% of people don't pay income tax is actually true — specifically, because their income is so terrifyingly low that they actually get credit from deductions at the end of their form, but still have to pay a disproportionately painful sales and property tax.

I love that the 'Republican National Committee' is calling Obama's remark sexist. Of all the institutions to cry at sexism.
It's like you have to take your sense of self-awareness out back and shoot it in the head as your opening prerequisite for calling yourself a Republican.
Taken in and of itself, the comment didn't seem especially offensive to me, since it was paired with heavy emphasis on her competence at the job. But I guess when most women are still struggling for equal representation at the top of the political pyramid, you've got to be a little extra careful about how you compliment them.

Okay gang, we're heading down Apple Lane on the way to Orange Boulevard.
The CEO making $100 million while the receptionist is on food stamps is unacceptable. The answer is not penalizing the CEO, it's actually enforcing something akin to a liveable wage.
Another thing politicians seems to shy away from doing. Admittedly, the Republidoofuses are the primary criminals in that one.
