The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

From the way I read it more like "make the parents discourage the students from voting."

And that's exactly why it's utterly stupid.

Many people realize, especially the young ones, that Republicans just aren't giving what the majority want, or what's needed. So they don't vote 'em.

Hopefully this new law will get quickly squashed and removed due to being completely pointless and stupid.

[up] Equally stupid.

[up] In a world where elected state officials mistake a mop washing station and go crazy for "supporting islamic faith" what makes you think "pointless" and "stupid" is actually a bar setting low enough to stop things?

Nobody said it was.

Just that it's stupid and shouldn't have been allowed in the first place.

In a reasonable world, whoever did this would have been shitstormed out of office for 1. trying to use the law to manipulate voters and 2. wasting the governments time.

And again, I stand by what I just said.

Regardless of what world it is, still completely stupid. As is anything encouraging young people to not do healthy things that improve the country.

Seriously. They don't seem to be able to stop the voter disenfranchisement. They seem to want to do everything possible to make it harder and harder for people who aren't their base to vote.

@NC Voting Law: How stupid, why are they acting like this? The Republican party seems to be doing a lot of stupid stuff, but the party doesn't seem like it is gonna collapse. Even the most enthusiastic republican would have to concede there was a high chance of Barack getting reelected considering he was the incumbent. Why are they getting politicians acting like their power is coming apart at the seems right this very second? Or is this more of a long-term fear seeing as how their approval among the younger set is much lower?

@Survey: I'd like to but I don't want to give away my zip code. If they discovered I'd used a fake zip code they'd probably throw it out, if the program bothers to check that is.

Democrats, ironically, aren't barring people from voting(you know, beyond age at best, 18 and older only). Although I can't remember the whole immigrants voting policy.(I was born in America, so forgive me for not doing the research), and the reason they're winning is simply because of their policies and practices. There's always a fair chance more people could vote Republican with no one barred.

To be honest, Republicans making it harder for people to vote in general probably does not help them get more votes in general, due to people being pissed off at this practice. Not saying that many voters will change their vote, but it certainly does not help their stance.

Yeah, if you're reducing the percentage of people who can vote, you're reducing votes for all the parties.

I think it's basically them desperately trying to increase their market share without changing anything about their policies.

Tentacles hit the nail on the head. It's a poor attempt.

And will fail most likely. If these things keep up, they may soon no longer be a viable regular party. Might as well be a Green Party instead of Red/Blue.

Really, if you want more voters, change your policies to actually avoid discrimination and support humankind in general.

The funny thing about the discrimination question on the survey is, I don't think the Republican Party discriminates against people. I think Republican policies discriminate against people, which is a subtle but important distinction.

Not especially, since a political party is defined by their policies. They are literally nothing else, in my mind, except their policies.

Yes, let's conveniently ignore that in states and areas where folks own three guns apiece and a rifle, the gun violence rate is nearly nil.
Ahem.
While many factors contribute to the rates of gun violence in any state, our research clearly demonstrates a significant correlation between the strength of a state’s gun laws and the prevalence of gun violence in the state. Across the key indicators of gun violence that we analyzed, the 10 states with the weakest gun laws collectively have a level of gun violence that is more than twice as high—104 percent higher—than the 10 states with the strongest gun laws.

I don't see how Menendez's alleged Dominican things could possibly fall under FBI jurisdiction.

That's an interesting report Taoist. But I'd like to see one that lists the rates of gun violence in urban depressed areas vs. the rest, which was the point I made.

As I recall, the current total of shootings in Chicago has already superseded the grand total in Wyoming, iirc.

I am pretty sure that Chicago has more inhabitants than Wyoming.

Don't urban areas have more violence anyway no matter the gun laws?

Big city gun violence, especially in a in a heavily populated state, (More people likely live in the the city of Chicago all of Wyoming) is always going to surpass rural violence. It's apples and oranges.

[up][up][up][up] Chicago also has more people, more gangs and probably more (legal) guns (going by actual numbers). Plus Chicago's guns will likely be handguns, which are the kind of gun normally used for crimes.

Though I do believe that state gun law is stupid. Unless you're going to man the borders between states you need to have roughly similar gun laws across the entire country.

That's exactly my point. It IS apples and oranges. Playing with the numbers to make it look like it's strength of gun laws that has an impact on gun violence is misleading. I'm sure it makes a difference, but the point I made was that urban gang-related violence makes up something like half of all gun violence in the country.

Anything else is really just obfuscating the issue.

[up] That's saying in an equation that's xy^2=z, with (x) being gun laws, and (y) being gang violence or other factors, and z being total gun violence, that just because y has more influence on z than x, that x should be ignored as a factor.
