Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016re: gun suicides, both the aforementioned access to mental health care and background check requirements would help. Someone being treated for a mental illness is less likely to attempt suicide in the first place, and someone with a history of mental illness being unable to legally purchase a gun makes it harder for them to use a gun in any attempt.
Of course, that only helps for people with mental illnesses who don't already own guns. I'm honestly not sure what (if anything) can be done about someone with no history of psychological issues who already owns a gun up and deciding to shoot themselves. But then again, I'm not sure how common that is anyway.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. You know, the Second Amendment just says the 'right to bear arms'. And the thing about the militia, but arms could include anything from a rocket launcher to a Swiss army knife. If everyone owns a knife, that's the amendment fulfilled.
Da gubmint inv'din mah priv'cy!
EDIT: I have no friggin clue what accent that's supposed to be.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Midgetsnowman has brought up before how the current Republican method of currying favor with Latinos, the Hispanic population, et al, is to get someone who is one of those demographics and then have them say the same talking points as before.
Relatedly, the way they are reporting on issues related to them, such as immigration, is very two faced. the comparison of Fox News and Fox News Latino
reporting on how the AP is dropping the use of the term "illegal immigrant" and by extension "illegals."
the problem is that it will further entrench the two party system. If a third party gets no funding for its convention, then it might not be able to afford one, meaning it gets less air time and is less of a threat to the established parties.
That's assuming the system isn't already so rigged that all public funding for parties goes to the big two.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranRepublicans want to know what people under the age of 30 think of them
Here's the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8PXHD8Y
But don't worry, if you think the GOP is actually learning their lesson, questions 29, 30, & 38 proves that they're not.
Aw, god dangit, I want to reply, but I'm 37.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"question 38 is basically "If the republican party pandered to gay marriage rights would you ignore that everything else we say probably goes against your political conventions?"
and I love how theres no option for "I wont vote republican just because you pander to a minority" on question 30.

First rule of surveys: try to bury your biases as deeply into the compost as you can manage when drawing up the questions. Epic Fail.

Ah, more kindness and love
from NC. The new bill introduced would revoke the parent's rights to claim an individual over the age of 18 as a dependent on their taxes if that individual registers to vote anywhere other than their parent's home. The main group of people affected would be college students; the primary objective of this seems to be to reduce the number of students voting in the major college counties, were democrats often gain more of their support.

Wait, what? How is that even remotely legal?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"@Tentacles: Hopefully enough people saying "No, we won't vote for you even if you support Gay Marriage alone" will help.
That is nice, but you're still spouting more bullshit than a bull with bowel problems. You need to change a lot to get more votes.
Also, the other thing brought up recently is just plain stupid. Once you're 18, your vote should count, College or not.
Shadow? The idea is to discourage students from voting, not to make it illegal. Republicans hate college students with a passion because they tend to vote Democrat.
