The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Swiss took 10 years to decide whether the default intersection would be traffic lights or roundabouts. They picked roundabouts.

The problem with a direct democracy is that really loud people can completely derail the vote and it only works in Switzerland because of a combination of small population, about 20% of which cannot vote period, an extremely high level of patriotism and an obsession with following the rules. Only one of which is present in the US.

Okay, I'm sorry, the NRA is out of their damn minds. Just the description of the security at this area, much less the idea they were pitching...

The recommendation, among 225 pages of proposals to improve school security, was the culmination of three months of work by a task force led by Asa Hutchinson, a former Republican congressman from Arkansas, who unveiled the plan before a packed news conference with an unusually heavy security presence, including a bomb-sniffing yellow Labrador retriever. A dozen officers in both plain clothes and uniforms stood watch as Mr. Hutchinson spoke; before the event began, one of them warned several photographers to “remain stationary” until it was over.

Rick Scott: Dammit, that was funny. I'm almost tempted to forgive you for your voter-fraud sins if you keep that up.

... I have issues believing the article is accurate...

If it is, and the Brotherhood is as dangerous as he claims, then he killed himself by writing and submitting it(do you honestly think the Brotherhood couldn't ID him based on what he wrote?)... If he's truly afraid of them as he says he is, he'd have never written the article...

Of course, if another body turns up within the month, then I suppose I'd be wrong about it being, well, exaggerated...

... Allow me to rephrase...

I don't doubt the Aryan Brotherhood is dangerous, or capable of the murders in Texas(or assisting in the one in Colorado, though that's still unverified).

I doubt the accuracy of the claims made in the article about the Aryan Brotherhood via "personal experience"... If only because he signed his own death warrant(and his family's) if the accounts are accurate. And if the author was truly afraid of the Brotherhood, he would know that, and thus wouldn't have written the article.
