The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

so in ridiculous political news time, Science teacher decides to conduct a sex ed day in class because the health teacher wont. makes attendance of class optional for that day for people who object. Gets parents angry at him anyway for daring to even bring up the subject of birth control or saying the word vagina to 10th graders.

School will probably have to punish him to avoid the wrath of the parents. Perhaps by forcing him to take a paid leave of absence.

I just find the idea that a 10th grader hasnt heard the word vagina by 10th grade hilariously unlikely.

There has to be more to it than that. Anybody who seriously thinks the existence of vagina's would shock a bunch of 10th graders is an idiot. I'm sure a decent amount of kids in that class were already very familiar with them.

Where the hell are you supposed to teach it?

well, apparently the school had a "health" class. But said class refused to teach about reproduction period.

also he's accused of teaching "Inappropriate forms of birth control" which I will bet means "all of them that arent abstinence"

I forget. Not in science though. Uhhh... man, we had a class that combined that and a bunch of other things (it's the same class where we were forced to perform community service) but I don't remember the name.

That teacher needs a medal.

And whoever thinks that sex ed is inappropriate for a 10th grader needs a refill on basic science. That's well past laughable.

I learned it in health class, though it was heavily focused on abstinence and "do not make babies before you are happily married" with very little discussion of birth control.

@Kostya: Yes, but they're likely to have figured it out with a mix of secondhand guesses and outright superstition, which is not necessarily conducive to either healthy sexual behavior or not getting assailed by overzealous prosecutors for sexting.

My health class consisted of both the scientific basics behind sex. followed by being forced to watch a video of every possible sexual disease out there to convince us all how if we ever sexed a woman outside a christian marriage our peenies would burn off.

Course, they also didnt give us this talk until high school. when most of us were either already sexing or had discovered the then infant-ish Internet of the 1990's where porn was already easy to find free.

I never got any sort of sex-ed. No talk of ST Ds, no abstinence-only stuff, nada.

Same, until I was bombarded by it in 9th grade,....of course High School was so liberal it was easier to get condoms than an ice pack.

And yeah that science class teacher needs a medal for that.

[down] Yes Sex-ed was a lot like that example for me as well, even down to learning how to use condoms.

I might as well add me two cents. In Scotland, we were told about the biology of sex, not to pressure each other into it (the eduvids illustrating this all featured men as the aggressive partner), that being gay was alright, and in one lesson were given some condoms and some plastic dicks and shown how to put one on properly. None of this was in the least controversial with parents.

So yeah, that's the British method. Interesting how it compares.
