Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think that we've demonstrated, at least here, that we're only too happy to call out the so-called "liberal media" on its shenanigans. In practice, you don't have liberal and conservative mainstream media so much as you have arch-conservative (Fox News) versus determinedly centrist (CNN) and mostly centrist but liberal-leaning (MSNBC).
In fact, the news media in general suffers from a number of serious flaws, political leanings being only one.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"THE UNTHINKABLE HAS HAPPENED!!!!!
Bill O'Reilly supports same sex marriage (well civil unions but still....)
O_O
O'Reilly pains me. He acts like a blunt but intellectually honest jerkoff who speaks hard truths, when he's actually just a regular old jerkoff.

Generally, I suspec tto a large degree O'reilly is a decently intelligent, college educated man who says a lot of what he says because he sells huimself to the fox news public as intellectually honest but blunt.
I suspect in private he knows full well he's spewing bullshit half the time.
This is just a case of him recognizing when the tide is shifting and getting his ass onto the likely to win side before everything goes to hell.

If O'Reilly's stance is the result of him being on the side of equality all along and simply hiding it under being a Tea Party shill, I can respect that. Or at least as much as I can respect a shill.
If this is just a case of him betraying his principles in order to be deemed acceptable by the new order than I can say the 2.4 ounces of resepct I had for him just vaporized.

It was an honorBecause his behavior fits in with a lot of reporters and anchors who have worked at FOX, who have said, once out of the company, that they were forced to rewrite articles and speak news/arguments they knew were complete and utter tripe bullshit Roger Ailes and friends want propagandized.
Sic: Smart man, this is one of the few places he could probably get work, they pay a very cushy paycheck and he has the likely chance of being completely blacklisted and discredited should he ever leave for a job hat fits positions he more likely believes in.
Please tell me this is a joke.....
It was an honorIt's not a joke, Starship.

I'd imagine not. Ailes has made it very obvious Fox isnt so much a news channel as it is a way to sell their own line of "facts" to republicans.
And it works because people like being told their view of the world is correct.
In short, my guess is that O'Reilly is telling the truth. he never actually gave two shits about "the sanctity of marriage" but its only now politically viable for him to say so because his superiors see the writing on the wall and any further spinning on the sancity of marriage is now deemed politically damaging.

(head-desk) Dammit, conservatives wound me. Everytime I think I've got a reason to return to conservative-ville, their stupidity and duplicitous cowardice slams the door shut.
Yeah, looks like I'm stuck in liberal-land for the time being.

It was an honorIn fact, Maxima. to give you an idea how propagandized Fox news is, you need only look to something Jon Stewart pointed out once.
Gretchen Carlson, Fox News anchor and former STANFORD GRADUATE (graduated Cum Laude and even studied abroad in oxford, for chrissake). Claimed on air she had to google the words czar and ignoramus because she had no idea what words that big meant.
What the hell do you think are the chances someone who graduated from Stanford with Cum Laude honors has NO IDEA what the words Czar and ignoramus are? Especially compared to the chances she was told to act like a dumb pretty blonde to attract viewers by being non-threatening and "normal"

Liberal land isn't so bad. We got pretty nice cookies, hippies can be cool, our liberal arts degrees assure we can live the life of a poor college student forever, (J.K. its just an easy joke I know that it isn't what a liberal arts degree is) of course you might miss the communion wafers, and the hunting, and occasionally you'll have to deal with hipsters, but eh you tradeoff things.
Is this the place to talk about gun laws? The other thread looks like it pretty much dedicated to which guns are better.

In fairness, that's almost universal in media: that highly educated women are forced to play dumb on the air. Fox News does take it a step above the rest, though.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"@Midget - I didn't go to an Ivy League and I sure as fuck know what an ignoramus and czar are. Unbelievable.
@Card - Well to be fair hippie chicks are pretty hot, although I'm gonna miss the Blonde Republican Sex Kitten s. And the LGBTQ folks make better drinking buddies anyway.
It was an honor@Card - Well yes, but then I mention I'm pro-life, pro-enforced borders, pro-traditional marriage, and even if they still manage to speak to me past that point, they completely lose it when I say I don't find new Doctor Who all that great.
Life can be lonely for a Rockefeller Republican in Liberaland.
-chuckles-
Okay I'm sorry, it's not appro -
Okay I'm sorry, I shouldn't laugh at a woman who got a Cum Laude.
...
I'm done now. Sorry.

So true!
It was an honor
