Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Notably, Algebra II was the most divisive.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Regarding Toure accusing Ben Carson of being a house negro: Toure has put together a reputation rich with Uncle Tomfoolery and sour grapes. He shouldn't be allowed to even utter the name of someone who's done so much for humanity, not merely black people, as Dr. Ben Carson, but alas, freedom of speech.
Ah, but alas the beauty of freedom of speech is that it lets intelligent people let off gems such as
Well played Doctor. Well played indeed.

Actually, it's a good call. Our education system doesn't need so many overwrought standardized tests.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.Standardized tests are rarely for the benefit of the students. They are a tool to gauge school performance, which then gets turned around to determine funding and other forms of support. This then leads towards a pattern of teaching so students can pass the tests rather than teaching for them to learn useful skills, as well as incentives to cheat. No Child Left Behind is one of the worst laws that ever got passed.
That said, kids do need to learn algebra in school, and we need to grade them on it.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Kids need to learn algebra in elementary, and it should be old hat by the time they graduate.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this. Also apparently Algebra being taught before High School or so is a generally not great idea, as it being taught in Middle School or earlier apparently fouls up with brain development somehow and makes it harder to teach other forms of math later.
And speaking about Middle School, even the whole way that thing is structured apparently a pretty bad idea.
"Reality has a well-known liberal bias." Starship, MSNBC would have to go pretty far to stoop to Fox's level of reporting quality (or lack thereof).
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"MSNBC is only 'liberal' because reality has a tendency to be. Once you cut out the lies and the BS. They've in fact only gotten a reputation for being liberal in contrast to Fox that keeps pushing farther and father left. In reality, their stance is actually fairly moderate.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickThey still use strawmen though, according to the MSNBC Conservative page.
Edit: Oh, that's a redirect.

"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."
That may be true..but you must admit some of the shit the blacks the republican party parades on stage comes off as hilariously apologetic to stuff Blacks shouldnt ever have to apologize for. Its the same reason i despise Marco Rubio despite being a latino. All he does is come onstage and apologize for how often the Republicans treat my family like shit.
And it pisses me off to no end.

Oh, for sure. Uncle Toms are no fun no matter what the minority or situation. But the answer is not more Uncle Tomfoolery, and that's where my beef with Toure (what the hell has he done to warrant a show anyway?) comes in.
Of course part of my beef, is that I'm well acquainted with the shit you get for being a black man that dares look at some of the abject nonsense of the liberal/"progressive"/Democrat bloc and call it such.
If you disagree with someone's position, attack the position; attack the premises behind them; attack the factual inaccuracies. But don't make a minstrel show of yourself by resorting to ad hominem attacks and gratuitous assumptions of someone's motives.
Especially since you (pr.) have so much to say about it when the "Repugnantcans" do it.
