Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

What's ironic is that Big Buisness is actually in favor of gay marriage, due to legal and economic reasons.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayWell...sorta. The blasphemy was the excuse the Pharisees ultimately used to drum up enough of a riot to get Jesus executed, and they tried to pin sedition on him too (which actually didn't stick — neither Pilate nor Herod saw him as a threat or even all that inflammatory, certainly not as much of one as the Pharisees themselves), but they didn't really care all that much about him until he did the whole table-flipping thing and hit the Pharisees in the wallet.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016The Dems really need to start working on their midterm game for the House elections... cause holding the Senate just seems to be numerically impossible at this point. Way too many Senators retiring or in conservative states that only went Blue on the anti-Bush wave of 06-08.

Any reasonable possibility of a third party victory a few years from now? I know that it is usually a pipe-dream for even the most well supported groups but I don't know it seems like there was a lot of dissatisfaction on both ends this time. Maybe the third parties are just to extreme to get the majority to vote for them.

The electoral system makes it nearly impossible. Even if one of the major parties has a full-on schism, its remnants will form a new major party.

It's less about the third parties themselves and more about the voting system we use. First past the post voting (ie, "first person to get 50%+1 votes wins") encourages tactical voting (that is, balancing "how much do I like this candidate" and "how likely is this person to win" instead of just voting for whoever you like most), which screws third party candidates. Third parties aren't going to get any significant presence on the national level until we change our voting system — which isn't going to happen because no one cares enough to make it happen.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Yeah, this is six years after the first Obama wave. It's hard to defend all those massive gains unless a ton of uber loonies run for office.

@Discar: No, it will first need to be reconciled with the House budget by the Conference Comittee.
