Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Someone in the comments section is calling hypocrisy on liberals because Obama used the phrase "War on Women." Key difference, one is a problem that affects half the population in statistically significant ways, the other is a fantasy concocted to whip people up into a frenzy over nothing.

X12 Hold on, doesn't Paul's statement imply that it's a good thing Obama wasn't jailed (and thus made unable to become president)? Because I swear that suggesting that the US wouldn't be better of if Obama wasn't in the White House is a level one heresy under GOP rules.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI'm not liking the Democrat's chances in the 2014 Senate Midterms.
The Democrats have to protect 21 Seats (3/4ths of which are in Red*, Purple*, or Light Blue * states.
On top of that the incumbent Democrat Senators in the vulnerable states of Iowa, West Virginia, and Michigan are retiring.
And the only Red states the Democrats have a chance of winning are Maine and Georgia (and Kentucky if Ashley Judd decides to run).

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016On the plus side, the Dems might pick up the House. What do the Governor's races look like? I remember that the Dems reported a net loss of gubernatorial elections in 2012.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.
The Dems prospects for the 2014 Gubernatorial Elections are looking good. The only areas of worry are Arkansas, Connecticut, Illinois (if current Governor Patrick Quinn* wins the Democratic nomination), and Massachusetts (if Scott Brown chooses to run).
Meanwhile the Republicans have to worry about a whole bunch of states. The most vulnerable being Michigan, Ohio, Arizona, Florida, Maine, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.
Rhode Island (whose Governor is Independent) is also a possible Democrat pickup.
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Wait, do people actually say "Spring Eggs" ? Because while "Happy Holidays" made sense, calling Easter Eggs "Spring Eggs" sounds a lot like Freedom Fries to me.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Personally, I have never understood the logic behind getting offended that someone would wish you Merry Christmas or Happy Easter. I have never felt any particular religious connotation of those holidays (aside from my wife dragging me to attend midnight mass every now and again), but maybe that's because I was raised in a secular household. At the same time, I've got no problem with wishing someone Happy Holidays or whatever. It just isn't a big deal one way or the other.
As a matter of public policy, though, a lot of people do take the religious connections seriously, and it is reasonable for the government not to appear to be advocating any particular religion, as per the First Amendment. The simple fact that many Christians get so pissed off about it is ample reason to enforce the restriction, in my opinion, because it tells me that they are using it to advance a religious agenda.

Honestly, if you get time off for Christmas, regardless of your beliefs, you can probably accept a "Merry Christmas", because it's a specific day of the year that you get to spend at home. (This does not apply to all people, as many have to work on Christmas).
If we got Hanukkah off, I would probably say Happy Hanukkah because even though I'm not Jewish, I still get the time off. (This is just a what-if.) The War on Christmas is incredibly stupid from both sides because most people really, really don't care. Hell, in England, there was a vote or something to change Christmas to something else, and the Muslim group shot it down.

Thats what confuses me most about the whole thing. As a not religious person, I couldnt give two shits about christmas or people posting billboard f0or or against christmas.
I do mind when people start screaming at some innocent convenience store clerk because company policy is to use happy Holidays to offend nobody and a christian takes it as a personal attack on his religion as though he's entitled to everyone following his holidays..
@Deviant Breaburn: Maine is Purple, not Red. Basically everything on, south or east of Rte 95 is Blue...ish, everything to the north and west is Red. The tepidness of the southeast's Blueitude is offset by it having the lion's share of the population.

Trump delenda estPoor
Bobby Jindal
. How are you supposed to sell out a state that collapses underneath your feet?
If anything, it's even more so, seeing how it's put nearly half the fucking nation in poverty and all but enslaved half the third world. I'm sorry, but their social policy is rather laughably small fry in comparison.
That...comes as a rather massive surprise. Here's hoping the House doesn't cock it up.

Now we just need to do the same to oil.
But, question: Has this already passed the House or not?

Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.Indeed. The real tragedy in American politics is that we spend so much time worrying about gay marriage, abortion, Christmas, and bibles in front of courthouses that we are distracted from the far more crucial problems of economic inequality, racial inequality, and whether the planet will be fit for humans in 100 years.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
X5 Now that is a smart move. Anyone in the House who votes against the Senate budget may well end up being painted as an out and out Wall Street shrill. It may not be fair, but it sure is smart.

@O:Riley: Not everything you don't like isn't a secret liberal war. Stop overreacting. I guess that is a pretty stupid thing to ask considering that kind of thing gives him money though. Ugh I wish people would stop taking him seriously, I mean much more so than now.
