The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Christie won't get past it either. He's committed the unholy sin of treating The Muslim Kenyan Anti-Christ as a human being. Rubio will get torpedoed for being a Latino (Hell, Mc Cain lost the 2000 Primaries because of rumors of a little too much "Spic Blood" running around his Grandchildren's veins).

I think you guys need to be reminded the Republican Primary System is designed so only the craziest crazies get filtered through. And Mitt Romney.

Biden's too old. He's not going to win a general election. He might take the primaries, though, which would screw us over.

If we want to win, we'll need someone like Kaine. Maaaaaybe Clinton could do it, though I wouldn't bet on it. Face it, the only way the Democrats are winning in this day and age is by keeping a firm hold on the center. With the exception of a few social policies, the country's politics are getting more conservative, not less.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

Yeah, hold the center while the far-right screws itself on social issues and demographics.

And Hillary Clinton... she could take it but I think she might be a one term president given her age.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

I don't know...I think a lot of Democrats are getting too eager to pat themselves on the back over demographic victory. 2016 is along long way away. And Obama's 2012 percentages are not sustainable. Anything remotely like Republican outreach, or just a white Democratic candidate, and suddenly those demographic numbers won't look nearly so good.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

Maaaaaybe Clinton could do it, though I wouldn't bet on it.

Have you been looking at the polls? Hillary beat Rubio in Florida, Scott Walker in Wisconsin, Rick Perry in Texas, Bobby Jindal in Louisiana, and Sarah Palin in Alaska.

Newt Gingrich has said that if Clinton runs in 2016 the Republicans are pretty much f*cked.

I personally doubt she'll run, but if she does she is pretty much assured victory.

Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) encouraged the Senate to quickly finish work on amendments to the 2014 budget before the process hits the "carnival stage."

@Ultrayellow: speaking as a latino. with latino dad. cousins. Uncles. nieces. nephews.

The thing is. I can see why theyre patting themselves on the back. The republicans as of yet have no strategy to connect with "my people" that doesnt come off as hilariously condescending or assuming we're idiots who will vote for them because they shovelled a few dollars our way and put a brown man up on a pedestal speaking the same talking points.

Obama didnt cause it.

What caused it is Republican's idea of "outreach" completely fucking ignores how a hispanic family functions and assumes we're just brown colored potential republicans if they just say the right things about jesus and hard work and occasionally show up in our home areas waving mexican flags.

As such, it comes off about as sincere as a 3 dollar bill.

@DB:...First of all, Gingrich just said that Clinton could win the primary. Which is correct, but not what you said.

Secondly, Clinton's in an excellent position right now. As Secretary of State, nobody's going to criticize anything she says or does (BS about Benghazi aside). 2016 is a long way away. Let them fight a Democratic primary, and you'll see her negatives skyrocket. People will suddenly start remembering why they picked Obama instead. I think she could win, but state polls right now are hardly conclusive evidence.

@Midget: That said, you're more liberal than the average Latino, no? You do post on tvtropes, after all...

[up] Sorry, I posted the wrong Gingrich quote.

@Rubio

The GOP doesn't need all of the Hispanic Voters to vote for Rubio. Just about 50%. I think he can manage that he plays his cards right.

Representative Steve Pearce (R-NM) wants to create a "virtual Congress," where lawmakers would leverage videoconferencing and other remote work technology to conduct their daily duties in Washington from their home districts.

FAA shuts down 149 air traffic towers due to sequester

Senators vote 75 to 24 to glue an endorsement of Internet sales taxes onto a Democratic budget bill

EDIT: Here's my personal theory on why Hillary is so popular.

The majority of Americans see Obama as Liberal, so they are disillusioned with the Left due to Obama's lukewarm presidency.

However the public is still reluctant to trust the GOP as the Republicans are suffering from an identity crisis, and the phantom of Dubya has not yet completely faded.

With both the Right and Left discredited, Americans turn to Hillary in the hopes that the Clinton brand of Centrism can bring back the booming economy of the 1990s.

@DB: That makes more sense. However, I will note that he's talking about the current GOP, not whoever will hypothetically face the Democrats in 2016.

Edit: Not a fan of the virtual Congress. Government should not strive to become more disjointed and impersonal.

I'm a huge fan of the virtual congress. Do you know how much time the congresscritters spend flying back and forth every week? Not only is it a waste of resources, it's really hard on them too. That much travel just grinds you down.

Not sure about this specific proposal, but the idea in general has merit.

As Secretary of State, nobody's going to criticize anything she says or does (BS about Benghazi aside).

Hillary Clinton is not Secretary of State anymore, though. Since February the US Secretary of State has been John Kerry.

@virtual Congress: I don't see a huge problem with it. They will still travel to Washington for serious debates and general face time (and can you immagine the fallout if they are not physically there for an importaint vote?), but that would mean that they could vote for lessor items even if they are not in Washington at the time.

The only real problem I can see is that it would be even easier to do what Republicans did this last year: keep Congress technically "open" and stop "temporary" apointments. And probably other technical issues as well. (A Talking Filibuster should only be preformed if physically there.)

Hillary could unite the nation behind her. Joe Biden is the closest thing to a second candidate, but he's got issues being taken seriously. Everyone else is either a dark horse (DNC chair or not, Tim Kaine is still a who-the-hell-is-that) or, in Warren's case, too liberal. As much as many of us like Warren, do we want her anywhere near the voters in Virginia, for example?

Christie vs. Biden would be a knockout in favor of the Republican Party, of course, but it's doubtful that Christie can win the primary.

Eh, Romney got through the primary by running to the hard right. If Christie did that, I don't think he'd win the general election.

The craziest crazy is only one of the potential primary winners; the other potential winner is the floppiest windsock. Which is how we got Romney.

So, I guess I'll have to wait till 2020 or 2024 for President Warren.

Why is it looked upon so badly when a politician changes his viewpoint? I understand if they do it constantly or are doing it for a stupid reason but it seems like anytime a politician changes his opinion people complain about him or her being unable to hold down consistent position.

Because people think that the world is static and like predictability. And because flip-flopping sometimes is a sign that someone just assumesn the most useful position even without sincerely holding it.
