Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Also they don't approve of a minimum wage increase because it would reduce their backers profit margins (hell for most it would actually be their profit margins, not even their backers).

According to the BBC World News Service, a court in the US has ordered tobacco companies to fund an ad campaign that would explain the dangers of smoking, as well as detailing the history of the lies that tobacco adverts have told people in the past. The tobacco companies would have to list their lies and apologise for them publicly.
I think this is a very good thing.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur. That FEMA thing — it's more head-in-the-sand BS over climate change. FEMA thinks that we're going to have more and worse flooding events as time goes on; Republicans scream, "CLIMATE CHANGE NOOOOOO" and pass laws to stop it from rezoning likely flood areas. Thus, when those floods happen, the homeowners in question will be unprepared for them and the damages much greater than they would have been otherwise.
Thanks, Republicans, ever so much, for sticking up for the little guy.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"^
You're not forgetting the FEMA Conspiracy Theories, aren't you? That is another factor, especially on the outer edges of the Republican Party.
Keep Rolling OnIn this situation though, FEMA is just going "There's a chance of major flooding, so we want to let people know so they can prepare. We may be wrong, but better safe than sorry."
And the Republicans are just going, "No! Global warming isn't a problem. BETTER RIGHT THAN SAFE!"
And FEMA was so incompetent around Katrina that I don't think it's a problem.

FEMA was gutted by Bush, then it was, as a direct consequence, incompetent to deal with Katrina. Obama restored it and put competent people in charge, and it dealt with Sandy much better. Cause and effect is really simple sometimes.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yes, he used it for patronage. Then everyone was all surprised when FEMA wasn't competently led. Durrrrrrrrrr.
It's something of a meme: Republicans believe that government doesn't work. When they get in office, they try to prove it.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I've thought about it, but then I figured I'd have to deal with worse racial crap than in America, and everywhere else I could go is run by the right, so unless things got really shitty I'd prefer to stay here.
Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.Regarding the "Move to Canada" meme, I wouldn't recommend it at the moment; the Conservative Party of Canada is better and worse than the GOP. Better, because there aren't quite as many fundamentalists/corporate shills/complete nutters (though, don't get me wrong, there are still plenty). Worse, because they have a majority in Parliament and one of the aforementioned nutters is the freaking Prime Minister.

There's been an overall conservative movement in global politics of late, abetted by the financial crisis, when the most strident voices managed to get heard over the sensible ones. Hopefully the trend will reverse itself sooner or later.
The U.S. still has the most conservative politics of any First World nation, though, which makes the "move to Canada/Mexico/wherever" meme particularly facepalm-worthy when it comes from Republicans.
