Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm gonna nitpick here. It's Fort Bend county
, the county immediately southwest of Houston.
But we have suvived this long without any major stikes...
Seriously though, we have had some near-misses that were also statistical hits. I think that any sort of "astroid deffence" should be an off-shoot of the International Space Station and have multiple contributors. The problem is that there is no political will for outer-space programs.
Yu hav nat sein bod speeling unntil know. (cacke four undersandig tis)the cake is a lie!Just go up to these people and say: "Do you want to guarantee making money as much as possible in the future? Put money into asteroid defense which will, as a side effect, undoubtedly have a lot of new useful technologies required. It might not mean immediate profit, but it will mean you're less likely to die horribly." These people are so bad at statistics that you could probably trick them into going along with it.

The way people treat space is kinda a single-issue wonk for me, but I'll summarize it as: Every time we spend money on NASA, we get a lot in return. Lots of things have been invented in the course of reaching outer space that are extremely useful on the ground. And that's not even getting into the "We've only got one planet, we should protect it better/have spares" thing.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.Hell, Velcro was a side effect of the space program. NASA's come up with way more useful technology than the military tends to on a fraction of the budget. And, pushing for space exploration and so on will open up resources in outer space that we can't touch right now. Even if it turns out we can't actually do anything about those resources, that might not be a bad incentive.

Senate has passed a plan to keep the federal government running, House still has to pass it but that looks likely. Guess the threat of a shut down is enough to get them to kick the can down the road.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. After the "shutdown" is averted, what is the next big battle in the 2012-2013 US Budget War? After "debt ceiling", "fiscal cliff" and "sequester" (that is a really cool term, by the way)?
Oh, and remember Bachmann's comments on the Alzheimer disease research? Her claim that goverment is holding it up with over-regulation was Pants-On-Fire-d
by politifact.

That's a funny coincidence. What kind of enemies does a chief bureaucrat in charge of the prison system earn?

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Yes. But it's significant because earlier (fiscal cliff days, for instance) a lot of Democrats, many on this very thread, were saying we should let it happen since Republicans would take the blame.
That's no longer an option.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.That incident with Bob Woodward, the White House tours controversy, and a very poorly timed golf game certainly didn't help Obama.
Though the Republican's image isn't exactly benefiting from the Sequester.

Well if you compare the beliefs of the Nazis and the Tea Party you'll spot a decent amount of similarities. It's why I always crack up when they compare Obama to Hitler.
