The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Fighteer: Oh, I'm not denying it does. But I think we've all already taken it as a given that the conservative response was unreasonable, no?

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

You're not going to trip me up by getting me to make excuses for Obama doing stuff that I blamed Bush for. Or rather, if I am, I would appreciate being called on it.

I do think that it's not fair to blame the President for exercising the executive power that he is granted by Congress and by the Constitution. That doesn't mean I blanket approve of extrajudicial killings, but it is a legitimate exercise of executive power. You can't justify impeaching him for it, anyway.

Was that response directed towards Serocco, Fighteer? Because it seemed to me that Serocco recognized your point and calmed down accordingly.

I was talking to Ultrayellow just now. Serocco was an ass more times than we could tolerate, and had been in trouble before. The last straw was trying to pick fights with me via PM.

I don't support Obama's impeachment, don't worry. But I didn't support Bush's either. Obama's foreign policy is more like Bush's than a lot of people seem to want to think.

He calmed down over it. I'm fine with him not posting here, since he gets vitriolic, but I think you should at lest restore his PM system so he can issue a proper apology. It makes you appear too vengeful otherwise, which sets a bad image and precedent to everyone else in here.

He even said he acknowledged that Obama's impeachment is not the issue. The whole system is the issue and we need to find a way to change it. Though he phrased it terribly, and should not have taken out his aggression on you, I don't think that's enough for you to close yourself off. I'd at least grant him the ability to apologize to you personally over it.

In hindsight, we should've added a second stimulus, one almost entirely focused on infrastructure repair.

Edit: That said, at least the roads are working, right?

[up] If I remember correctly, the stimulus bill originally had a lot more in it, but most of it got shot down in Congress.

That is an awful grade. Good lord, we suck. And of course it's Congress shooting it down.

Thanks for agreeing with me, Braeburn, though I doubt Fighteer will see our point of view

Damn, I just missed a chance to make a direct attack on Serocco's position, and here he's gone. :(

What we're saying is that he should have his PM system turned back on, but I guess we're the only ones who feel that way

I think this link from Radical Taoist post 51508 deserved more attention :

Chennault was despatched to the South Vietnamese embassy with a clear message: the South Vietnamese government should withdraw from the talks, refuse to deal with Johnson, and if Nixon was elected, they would get a much better deal. So on the eve of his planned announcement of a halt to the bombing, Johnson learned the South Vietnamese were pulling out. He was also told why. The FBI had bugged the ambassador's phone and a transcripts of Anna Chennault's calls were sent to the White House. In one conversation she tells the ambassador to "just hang on through election". Johnson was told by Defence Secretary Clifford that the interference was illegal and threatened the chance for peace.

In a Christian Science Monitor commentary about the movie “Argo,” Bani-Sadr wrote that “Ayatollah Khomeini and Ronald Reagan had organized a clandestine negotiation … which prevented the attempts by myself and then-U.S. President Jimmy Carter to free the hostages before the 1980 U.S. presidential election took place. The fact that they were not released tipped the results of the election in favor of Reagan.”

This means that twice, presidential candidate negotiate with foreign powers to undermine sitting president policy.

The blog reagan-was-a-horrible-president.tumblr.com/ covered it too. Does that blog mod read this thread? I feel like in the last week, half the stuff I've linked recently showed up there shortly afterwards. If the owner of reagan-was-a-horrible-president does read this thread, then MAD PROPS! *brofist*

A little bit of information:

Mr Osborne says Britain will have [by April 2015* ] a 20% rate of corporation tax - the lowest business tax of any major economy in the world.

Apparently, the US has a 40% rate of Corporation Tax.

Which almost none of its corporations pay, thanks to loopholes.

Quite. Could they lower Corporation Tax and get more income, at the same time as locking the loopholes, I wonder?

I would imagine so. Addressing the offshoring of profits would be one of the biggest ways to accomplish that goal.

In other news, the president of the Greater Fort Bend County (Texas) Tea Party was previously the director of propaganda for the American Fascist Party.

Disturbing, isn't it?
