Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Slate on the GOP's self-autopsy.
The article makes a good point about Rand Paul; now that the Tea Party is discredited and the rest of the Republican Party is trying to jettison them, Paul looks strong because he's the only guy who's showing anyone a coherent alternative to the way things have been going, and because his platform is both based on principle and appeals rather strongly to America's center.
However, I get the feeling that both sides of the Republican Party will go out of their way to keep the guy marginalized. Actual libertarianism is really not what either the social conservatives or the kleptocrats want.
Rand Paul is the guy you pat on the head and say "Good boy!" to while talking shit about him behind his back.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Okay, this just showed up on my uncle's Facebook.
"ABSOLUTELY NOT TELLING THE TRUTH."
"The Secret Service does not make political decisions.... "The Secret Service makes security decisions."
[Obama] wanted to inflict ... maximum pain upon the American people.... it had to be public pain. If you don’t see it, it doesn’t hurt.”

... what? Why do they think he's blaming Secret Service? The official page for the White House tours says "Due to staffing reductions resulting from sequestration, we regret to inform you that White House Tours will be canceled effective Saturday, March 9, 2013 until further notice."

"I don't know how I do it. I'm like the Mr. Bean of sex." -Drunkscriblerian@51483- well, according to the History Channel, Obama is the Devil
(been looking for an excuse to post this, seems too close to be coincidence IMO).
That's come up in multiple news media. If it is coincidence, it's an awfully convenient one. What are people watching that film supposed to take away from it?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I just chose the first source I could find- seen it covered a lot. What makes me very suspicious is that the actor playing Satan doesn't really look anything like Obama without makeup, so it can't really be explained by a coincidental Identical Stranger.
Its also a rather unique depiction of Satan, I would think (although iirc, the one in The Passion Of The Christ was also a Black Cloak, although very different in appearance).

Edit, edit, edit, edit the wikithe stupidest thing I've seen related to the white house tours was a moronic "info"graphic claiming a single dinner for a foreign dignitary cost more then a year worth of white house tours.
because apparently hosting foreign people is a bigger waste than touring the section of the white house where nothing important happens.

What really pisses me off about that portrayal of Satan? Here's what the actor looks like without makeup.
◊ He's a Moroccan actor with a history of doing Satanic roles, I've heard, but it's funny how the History channel darkened his skin and raised his cheekbones to make him resemble a certain U.S. President.

Weeeeeell.
Assuming one believes in Adam and Eve being the first created human, them having white skin would make sense as the blessing of god would give them protection from such things as UV-Light and Skin cancer.
Hence, no need for darkened skin. Only after they got kicked out of Eden would they be affected by it and under evolution their children would develop darker skin because they who don't have it die off or move to found other populations.
If one is really want to go deeper into the Insane Troll Logic if this it would mean that white humans are closer to gods "original blueprint" and Jesus was obviously white because God was using this "original blueprint" to assemble his physical body.

"You can reply to this Message!"The GOP's response to the sequester is currently embodied by the Paul Ryan plan, a combination of austerity and tax cuts for the rich that would only make our current economic problems worse. It's even gotten to the point where determinedly centrist news organizations are calling it a crock of shit.
Democrats have offered several competing proposals, all of which involve tax increases, but they are DOA without Republican support, just as any Republican plan is DOA without Democratic support.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Assault weapons ban to be dropped.
Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein said her proposal would be left out of the firearms control bill.
Democratic Senate leader Harry Reid made the decision, saying the proposal could not get enough votes.
An assault-type weapon was used in the December massacre that killed 26 at a primary school in Newtown, Connecticut.
The shooting shocked the US and revived efforts in Washington to prohibit such firearms.
But while polls show most Americans back an assault weapon ban, influential pro-gun lobby groups such as the National Rifle Association have pressed lawmakers not to support such a move.
Sen Feinstein said she might put forward the assault weapons proposal, similar to a previous one she sponsored that expired in 2004, as an amendment to the bill.
But she would need 60 votes from the 100-member Senate to succeed, a margin analysts say the amendment would be unlikely to reach.
"I very much regret it," Sen Feinstein said, reports the Associated Press. "I tried my best."
This isn't really a surprise, seeing as nobody except perhaps Feinstein thought it would get the margin in the senate, let alone the House.
Schild und Schwert der ParteiLabour groups love Obama's labour secretary pick, Tom Perez.
Naturally,
the right wing noise machine is going after him.

@Ramidel: theyll deciude that their candidate didnt act conservative enough.
Thats kind of the basis of the schism. Some republicans are re-examining their beliefs. Some have decided that conservativism cant fail, you can only fail conservativism.
