The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I believe it's somewhat unlikely. The referendum in Puerto Rico was weirdly done and Puerto Rico as a state would probably lean heavily Democrat, from what I've read. And like hell will the Republicans allow another new Democratic state.

I'm kind of amused by that republicans who do a good job of showing leadership in a crisis like Chris Christie get fat jokes hurled at them and not even invited yet crazy people who think catholic bishops have anything to do with the passage of Obamacare are a-okay.

[up]Yeah, I don't understand the logic behind that. A majority of the Catholics I know either oppose it or are indifferent. I also don't understand how they could have been infiltrated by homosexuals while still being one of the most vocal and powerful detractors of them.

[up][up]Do their views on the statehood matter? I thought it was something that Puerto Rico decided. Also I don't see how they could spin the opposition to granting statehood. They can't just say that it will give Democrats an advantage.

Also the idea that George Soros secretly is the puppetmaster behind all puppetmasters is possibly one of the most hilarious things ever.

Its almost ironic that they fear a successful self-made investment capital based businessman so much

He's the most wealthy hedge fund manager in the world. He's originally from Hungary, and Jewish, and rolling in fuckloads of money which he funnels mostly back into making more money or into philanthropy work.

He also advocates government regulating self-interest based market excess and bases his beliefs off the idea that he could be wrong, and therefore must constantly question and improve his own beliefs. Also, he's a liberal.

In short. He's a highly successful financier who disagrees with everything the republican party believes about the free market and is also a Jew, and therefore also attrracts the anti-semite crowd with a vengeance.

Also, he was one of many people who was warning about the current recession before it started.

The referendum was non binding, and like everything with federal law (and ratifying Statehood is federal law stuff), Congress is in charge. And guess who controls the House and has enough members to Filibuster the Senate? And would have the most to lose from a likely to lean Democratic state that would receive huge amounts of federal aid?

The Republicans. Especially with their constituents going "WHY ARE YOU LETTING THE WETBACKS IN. D8 BUILD A FENCE AROUND PUERTO RICO."

[up][up]Sounds like a decent enough man.

And why do they think he's secretly in charge? I assume it's more complex than the fact that he's Jewish and would be part of the Zionist movement.

[up]I just don't see how they can spin not granting statehood without coming off as racists. Sure they already do but they try to keep that quiet.

I'm guessing because he's both won massive amounts of money on currency speculation before, and also because he's publicly backed both efforts to get Bush jr out of office and funded Occupy Wall Street, among other philanthropy work.

So I suppose its easier to just picture him as the liberal version of business satan than accept that he's a businessman who doesnt agree with republican policy.

He does sort of sound like the liberal version of the Koch Brothers. However it doesn't sound like he's out to make a profit like them.

When George Soros buys a governor off like the Kochs did with Scott Walker, then we can talk about that sort of equivalency.

my hypothesis is he terrifies republicans because the 22nd richest man in the world, with more money than most republicans will ever see, rejects the idea the free market is perfect.

Officially yes, but a good portion of their base will be fearful of a new Democratic constitutency and of immigration, and there will be some racists.

I imagine it could be sold to a good portion of the Republibase in "expanding freedom's frontiers, expanding America, sun never sets on Uncle Sam, EAGLES" terms.

To be fair. just because he broke the bank of england still doesnt make the claim he's the secret liberal master of all and has enough power to force rupert murdoch to fire Glenn beck any more sane.

Krugman wrote in his book The Return of Depression Economics that the UK was heading for something like that anyway and Soros likely just jumpstarted it a bit.

My question is how the hell was the Bank of England so weak that a single currency speculator could bust it wide open?

This is all a bit off-topic, but it is true that the UK government had been vacillating. All the Tories' fault, as usual.

Turtle Mocks Retard

GOP uberconsultant Karl Rove lashed out at former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) on Sunday, mocking her decision to leave office early. Rove's criticism was a response to comments Palin made at the Conservative Political Action Conference in which she suggested the poor performance of Rove-backed candidates in the 2012 elections indicates that Rove should get out of the political consulting business.

"If these experts who keep losing elections and keep getting rehired and getting millions — if they feel that strong about who gets to run in this party, then they should buck-up or stay in the truck," Palin told CPAC Saturday, referring to Rove. "Buck up or run. The Architect can head on back to the great Lone Star State and put their name on some ballot –- though for their sakes, I hope they give themselves a discount on their consulting services."

Rove pushed back in an interview with Fox on Sunday.

"I'm a volunteer and I don't take a dime with my work from American Crossroads and pay my own travel expenses out of my own pocket and I thought she was encouraging volunteer grassroots activity and I'm a volunteer," Rove said. "Second of all, look, I appreciate encouragement I ought to go home to Texas and run for office and, it would be news if I did to have her support. But I don't think I'm a good candidate — a kind of balding, fat guy. And second, if I did run for office and win, I would serve out my term and I wouldn't leave office midterm."

Palin famously resigned her governorship midway through her first term in office in early 2009, shortly after her 2008 bid for vice president came up short. Rove's Crossroads operation spent hundreds of millions of dollars on the 2012 elections, only to see nearly all of his marquee candidates fail to be elected.

They really are in a state of civil war at the moment. The GOP has, I estimate, 1 year to deal with this before it will move over into costing them the next election.

Exactly-it wasn't really Soros that caused the whole thing, it was going to happen anyway and Soros just triggered it (for self gain, mind you)

Definitely not a Lawful Good act, but I wouldn't call it Chaotic Evil.
