The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

To be honest I don't think it matters if the leaders support this talk. If they stray too far they'll just get voted out and replaced with someone that is that extreme. This is why the party purge is so dangerous. It forces sane people to behave like idiots because if they don't they lose their seat to an actual nut.

But that is the thing. Romney might get voted out by his own party for a lot of things but the vast majority won't support some guy who says slavery was a okay. If the vast majority is against this idiot than one of his ilk isn't going to get a lot of power out of their own group.

Is this or the gun thread the right place to talk about gun rights? The gun thread seems to be talking about the different kind of guns and debating about the merits and bugs of each of them. But this thread seems more focused on the parties in the general.

Now I know polls, vote counts, public opininion, political scholars and the rest pof the world thinks we're losing, but we're actually winning!

And people wonder why democratis pundits compare the GOP to a cult.

That stuck out to me too. It reminds me of Limbaugh's "Everything but the polls predicts a Romney landslide!" comment.

my guess it is has to do with the Go P's increasing support of throwing out facts when they conflict with gut feelings of "right" and "wrong".

There's also the fact that they think the average person is more conservative than they really are. I think their side has higher voting rates which is probably what skews their perception.

[up][up] Is it even that? I figured it was more that the GOP think it's Conservative when it's actually Reactionary. I recon America is as Conservative as they think, it's just that they think Conservative means Republican, which it doesn't.

[up]Nope. If you poll on the issues Americans generally support Democratic positions but when you tell them the Democrats are in favor of that they suddenly don't support them as much. This is very evident when you talk about gun control and Obamacare. People agree with most of it but when Obama's name is attached they suddenly hate it. The right wing media complex is just that good at controlling people.

But most of the positions espeoused by the Dems are Conservative, even compared to the old Dukakis/Tip O'Niel/Mondocrats of the 80's which are centrist to the rest of the world.

Obama is easily the most Conservative Dem President since WWII,and since Cleveland.

For the purposes of this discussion I believe they're using conservative in the American sense. Yes it's wrong but they're just trying to prove a point.

Holy wow everything about that exchange at CPAC is disgusting.

At one point, a woman challenged him on the Republican Party’s roots, to which Terry responded, “I didn’t know the legacy of the Republican Party included women correcting men in public.”

That is incredibly ironic given the Republican party had a higher proportion of its representatives vote for the nineteenth amendment and were very vocal in the early women's rights movements. Then again the Democrats of those days would mostly be Republicans of today.

While we're on the "are you shitting me" tangent:

BP sued Friday to block what could be billions of dollars in settlement payouts to businesses over the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The London-based oil giant accused the court-appointed administrator for the settlement, Patrick Juneau, of trying to rewrite the terms of the deal. BP said Juneau violated the settlement in the way he used a complex formula to determine the payments to businesses.

Countersue and nail them for the FULL cost of cleanup, sez I.

Obama is easily the most Conservative Dem President since WWII, and since Cleveland.

Clinton was easily more Conservative than Obama is, and I've already pointed out why the Cleveland/Obama comparison is silly.

And why shouldn't the use 'Liberal' and 'Conservative' in the American sense? This is America after all.

[up][up]Well Boehner I hope you like it when your child refuses to talk to you.

Palin you're irrelevant. Go away.

Bush I think most of the people that don't vote for you don't do so because they think your core beliefs are moronic or offensive. If anything more of your constituents need to realize that their party doesn't actually care about them.

Yeah, that abortion bill is basically banning it 2 weeks after a missed period.

Also, Please do try it, Walker, we'd love to have you out of the state so you can stop fucking everything that we've worked for over the past century up.

@Re: Abortion.

I don't think so. Roe vs Wade decided you can't completely ban abortions. However I believe states can still put restrictions on the practice.

Yes but I believe the restriction is so absurd that a woman would have to get one almost immediately after realizing she was pregnant. I don't know how far in advance you have to schedule abortions but if it's anymore than a week it's probably going to be almost impossible.

I know it would never pass but they really need a law saying you can't restrict it to before the baby is able to survive outside the womb on its own. That's...five months I believe?
