Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yes. Evolutionists, gays, transgenders, pro-choicers, people of other religions. I even had some good old-fashioned race bias thrown in; for a while I didn't like Hispanics.
- Gasp!* "But Starship, then how did you become the totally cool and all-around awesome guy we all know on TV Tropes??"
Well, part of it was my religious epiphany which I've discussed elsewhere. But a large part of it was the horror of learning just how wrong I was; some of which has happened here on this site, and even in this very thread (remember, I'm still getting politically realigned as we speak). As a whole, we can admit to murder before confessing to being mistaken.
Another factor is the absolute richness of learning from others. Evolution, for instance, is pretty freakin' cool and the science behind has yielded many benefits. Gays and transgenders are emblematic of some of the very best qualities of courage, love, and dedication.
The point is, I've learned the truth. I'm not diminished by exploring other viewpoints. I'm increased by it.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Trump has a really skewed view if he thinks that finance is the only measure of success. Not exactly an abnormal, or even atypical one, but still.
And I, personally, would love a godless government. Especially since it is pretty emphatically what the founders intended for a nice piece of anti-conservative irony.

"The marvel is not that the Bear posts well, but that the Bear posts at all."I love the implication inherent in all these people insisting that morality only comes from God, that Atheists or Agnostics (or even people of religions which don't worship the same god) are all immoral and just waiting for a chance to ruin everything. And frankly, that's the big implication of the scare-tactic of saying that Politician X wants a "godless" america.

Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.Yeah. As I recall, they got info on the results of a trial for an Alzheimer's drug and acted on it before it was published.
"The marvel is not that the Bear posts well, but that the Bear posts at all."You're confusing two currently ongoing scandals.
Also the BBC: "JP Morgan accused of hiding losses by Senate report"
.
"We found a trading operation that piled on risk, ignored limits on risk-taking, hid losses, dodged oversight and misinformed the public," said Carl Levin, the subcommittee chairman, who is a Democrat.
The report suggested that senior executives, including chief executive Jamie Dimon, were aware of huge losses at the bank, downplaying the risks in public, but also blamed federal regulators for a lack of oversight that allowed the country's largest bank to take on levels of risk.
The bank "gambled away billions of dollars through risky and exotic trades, then intentionally hid its losses from investors and the public, showing complete disregard for risk management procedures and regulatory oversight," Republican Senator John McCain said.

Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.
Ah, you are right. Only heard bits about it on the ride home tonight. Sorry for any confusion.
The founders mostly just wanted disparate denominations to stop bitching at each other long enough for stuff to get done. Pretty much all of them that weren't some flavor of Christian were Deist.

Not really. Deism rejected religious authority, but said the existence of God can be shown through Reason with a capital R. Basically what would happen if you turned the Renaissance into a religion.
I mean it wasn't exactly Christianity, but it wasn't really nonreligious and the values weren't that different beyond antiestablishment sentiment. "Reason" was used to justify pretty much the same things, good and bad.

I'm not really worried that the GOP will be able to successfully reach out to minorities, not when they can't agree that slavery was a bad thing.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.![]()

Wow, how incredibly stupid. Damn it how can somebody seriously think that. I bet if this idiot experienced slavery he would totally defend it.
I'm pretty sure the vast majority of the Republican party wouldn't defend slavery or ask for segregation back.

Wildcard: Remember that about 20 percent of likely Republican voters don't think interracial marriage should be legal in at least two states. Do I think the majority feel this way? No, but 20 to 25 percent in the deep south? Yeah, I could buy that many thinking segregation and slavery are valid. Keep in mind that just because someone opposes these things it doesn't mean they're not a racist. They're just less extreme.
Maybe you have a point. It pains me to think of that but there are a lot of voters that are racist even in 2013.
I still oppose the idea that he will be seriously defended by the republican party leaders. I don't think if Mitt Romney hears about this he would seriously even attempt to defend his statements.

Palin is going to address CPAC in less than 15 minutes. Here is a livestream.

Thanks for the compliment but I'm afraid I have limits about learning about every issue. . Some issues I just can't find it within myself to care about. Which I hope to work on and correct sometime, but right now for example I can't find it within myself to care about zoning laws all that much.
Hmm...you might have a point though. However I do have one last issue with what you are saying. Perhaps it isn't ignorance per say that we celebrate and it is just a side effect? The "us vs. them" mentality can come from an emotional It's Personal reaction rather than the idea of "I don't want to know what the other side thinks". That often comes after it becomes personal.
Basically have you ever felt so much hatred for the other side of an issue you didn't want to know anything about the others? Especially if that something applied to you? A lot of people are probably just going with their own initial emotional reaction rather than choosing ignorance.
