Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump says he would fund canceled White House tours
New York judge blocks Mayor Bloomberg’s ban on large sugary drinks
So, Trump's way of protesting the budget cuts is to fund something that was cut out of his own pocket. I don't think he realizes it, but what he's saying is that if something is cut that the Republicans don't want cut, they should pay for it themselves!
And White House tours? I guess it would be interesting, but they aren't exactly critical. Tours of the Congress are still going on and those are the equivalent of the Parliament tours you get in Canada and England. The president isn't the Queen of England. He doesn't have five castles full of random crap that foreign dignitaries gave him.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016And fuck you too, Ron Johnson, you corporatist sexist shill.
Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FrySo I know Mccarthyism was a case of rampant paranoia, but why didn't we change the pledge to remove "Under God" after the whole Red Scare blew over? Is it just because the majority don't object, or is there anyone who can still say " fear the godless reds" with a straight face in 2013?

Probably the same people who call Canada socialist.

Maybe because of how that phrase is linked with the country? I know there was a movement to remove the phrase "And he shall have dominion from sea to sea" from the Canadian Parliament because it's a quote from the Bible.
It got struck down because it would require defacing Parliament because it's carved right into the building. It's not on a plaque or anything.
That would be pretty hilarious. A history of the U.S. trying to control us, so we try to control right back.

@Wildcard: Because this bullshit is making our students dumb. Thank you Bobby Jindal.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this. That is stupid. Why don't they just put that money into fixing the public school system?
Actually, that's not just stupid, it's dangerous. They are actively handicapping their students for whatever reason, which will only result in harm in the future. You kind of need to know how the world works and you should know about actual history before you try to get anywhere.
Unfortunately we have people in power who seriously come off as total morons, removing that push for intelligence.

The 1950s was one of those of Religious Revival eras. While this partially due to the Red Scare there were many other factors at play.
Also the majority doesn't object.

The hippies not bathing part sounds accurate.

Possibly. As I am sure that at least some of them probably worshiped "Satan" just as a matter of odds. But characterizing the entire movement with those two qualities is underhanded and inaccurate.
Now, presumably Louisiana is not considered the absolute worst U.S. state in terms of education. I'm just making a guess here, so I could be wrong about that.
But I genuinely cannot imagine what could be worse than having shit like the above taught in public schools. Are there other states just full of teachers who spend the entire day screaming incoherently at their students? Maybe things like this, too?
There's nothing false about the first passage. It's not the whole story(I certainly hope it's not the only thing mentioned about the Klan), but it's not false.
If the brutal oppression of blacks(and anyone suspected to be a "sympathizer") is included in a prior or later paragraph, it's a fairly accurate depiction of the KKK from the 1920s to 1950s...

And they say the south isn't racist.
Who cares? The klan doesn't deserve any sympathy. They are a hate group and deserve to be shunned and treated as monsters. This is as bad as defending the Nazis.
edit: This is why I don't like private schools. They can go against the established curriculum which is something nobody should be allowed to do. If you don't like what public schools teach then too bad. Every kid deserves to be taught the truth.

I don't really think we want to be in the business of ignoring everything about a group we dislike except the part we dislike about them. If the Klan did some non-heinous things, then that deserves to be in the history books too — right beside the very-definitely-heinous things they also did.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.
